The Difference Between Aging Gracefully & Trying to Look Young

The Difference Between Aging Gracefully & Trying to Look YoungWe’ve all seen them: the women who are visibly not in their 20s or even their 30s, yet their makeup and outfit say otherwise. Who wants to be the butt of other people’s jokes? There is nothing wrong with wanting to look younger but there is an age appropriate way to go about it. To make sure you’re not making the same mistakes, take note of the following tips to help you age gracefully instead of trying to be something that you’re not.

There is a visible difference between women who age gracefully and those who are simply trying to look young. The goal by far is to be the latter. Why? All women age differently and not everyone ages well. Unfortunately, there are many older women who are in denial about getting older and they try to mask the signs of the passing years by donning clothes that are too “young” for them to wear or sporting makeup looks that don’t fit them.

If you want to age gracefully, don’t hide your years behind layers of makeup. Take proper care of your skin by implementing a good, daily skincare and anti-aging routine. Cater to your particular skin type and add the one or two anti-aging items needed to get more effective results. Face it: you’re going to get wrinkles and fine lines eventually but there are ways to work with them. Piling a lot of foundation and powder on your complexion can cause you to look fake and unnatural, not to mention that the makeup tends to accumulate in the creases, making you look worse. Instead, be sure to treat your face to a good cleansing and exfoliation treatment and be sure to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Try a moisturizer that contains firming properties to tighten your skin and plump out fine lines. Invest in a good eye cream or serum to help minimize the appearance of crow’s feet. Will these products totally eliminate your fine lines and wrinkles? Not 100% but your face will look and feel better. If possible, skip the foundation and go without. Tinted moisturizer may work best for the all-natural look. Instead of dousing your eyes, cheeks and lips in loud colors, find a color palette that complements your skin tone and learn makeup tricks to play up your favorite features. You don’t have to have the face of a teen or 20-something-year-old to look fabulous in makeup.

Your clothes should make a positive statement, not one that makes you stick out like a sore thumb. Take a note from the pages of the Hollywood starlets that are well into their 40s and beyond. They continue to look wonderful without having to bare their midriffs or squeeze into low-rider jeans. Age appropriate clothes don’t have to mean old and stuffy. Choose fun colors that show off your personality. Try blouses that snuggle against your curves comfortably without leaving you gasping for air. Want to show a little skin without showing too much? Choose a sexy V-neck for some added grace with sex appeal. Stay away from too-tight jeans with flashy material and opt for comfy and fun khakis, Capri pants or flowing skirts. Sundresses are also another great item of clothing that looks great on women of any age.

The key to aging gracefully is to first accept the fact that you’re aging. You’ll more than likely never have the chance to look the way you did 10-20 years ago but then again, why live in the past? Focus on how great you look now and how you can continue to celebrate your fabulous self for years to come!
