How to Use Hot Rollers

How to Use Hot RollersIt seems that the unfortunate hot roller had to take a backseat when the more convenient and flashier curling irons came on the scene. But have you ever tried to get dressed or put on your makeup with a curling iron attached to your hair? The great thing about hot rollers is that you can wrap and roll, and then finish your morning preparations while your hair cools and sets. That doesn’t sound so tough, does it? The key to getting the biggest bang from your hot rollers lies in knowing how to use them properly.

The first step in creating a head of curls using hot rollers is to make sure that your hair is completely dry before rolling. Divide your hair into three sections across the top of your head, and each of the two sides. It is a good idea to spritz each section with a bit of medium-hold hairspray or apply a styling lotion before rolling. Do not use a maximum-hold hairspray at this point, since it will make the curls difficult to work with once the rollers are removed. Place the roller underneath your hair section, wrap ends around the roller, and then begin rolling in an upward motion toward the scalp. Complete the top sections first, and then follow up with the sides and back.

Hot rollers need at least 10 to 20 minutes to fully set the hair and cool completely. Don’t get in a hurry to remove rollers too soon, since this will affect how long your curls last throughout the day. For additional holding power, you can use a blow dryer on your head for a few minutes once the curlers have cooled down completely. When you do remove the rollers, take the clip off first, and slowly unwind the hair. Finger comb your curls to the style you want and set in place with a maximum hold hairspray. Your hair is curly, sassy and ready to go!

Hot Roller Tips

If you use hot rollers on your hair frequently, it is helpful to use a deep conditioning treatment on your tresses once in a while to protect them from the damage that regular heat can bring. Always make sure that you apply a medium-hold hairspray or setting lotion prior to rolling, and always use your fingers to style your curls rather than a brush or comb. If you end up with too much curl, you can simply use a blow dryer and round brush to relax the look.

Hot rollers don’t deserve the reputation that they have received. With a bit of know-how and a few tips under your belt, you can use those hot rollers to get the curly look you love.
