How to Use Hair Clippers

How to Use Hair ClippersTaking your child to a barber can get become expensive, especially when you’re on a budget. There’s no reason why you can’t cut your child’s hair yourself. While cutting hair with clippers may look a little scary, it’s really not. With our basic guide to using hair clippers, you can be well on your way to creating a hairstyle to suit your child’s needs.

Know Your Clippers

Getting to know your hair clippers is one of the most vital first steps in cutting hair. You will find that your clippers include several guard attachments/combs that are used for different lengths for cutting hair. Obviously, the shorter the attachment, the shorter the hair cut. Each of the attachments will have the inches marked as follows:

#0 (no attachment) - 1/100 inch

#1 - 1/8 inch

#2 - 1/4 inch

#3 - 3/8 inch

#4 - 1/2 inch

#5 and #6 – used her tapering

#7 - 7/8 inch

#8 - 1 inch

Once you are familiar with the hair clipper’s attachments, getting to know how the clippers work is your next step. The first thing you should know is that hair clippers are not like scissors. When cutting with the clippers the hair should never be wet. Wet hair can clog the blades and cause them to rust. When guiding the clippers through the hair, always make sure that you move them against the direction of the hair growth. Doing so will allow the hairs to be cut evenly. Also, make sure you are not placing a lot of hair into the clippers. Too much hair in the clippers can leave you with an unwanted chunky mess.

Cutting with Clippers

Now that you’re familiar with the clippers, it’s time to try them out.

·    Begin by combing your child’s hair in the style that you want to achieve. Most clipper sets come with a basic guide for different hairstyles that you can achieve using their clippers.

·    Starting at the back of the head, position the clippers at the bottom of the neck and using a rocker cutting motion, trim the hair towards the top of the head.

·    Continue in this manner until you have worked your way to the sides and top of the head.

·    Finish the cut by carefully trimming at the nape of the neck and around the ears.

Finally, if you’re worried about cutting your child’s hair with the clippers, you may want to purchase a cheap mannequin head with a wig to test out first. You can find a mannequin on many beauty stores or you can try asking your local cosmetology school for a used one for a fee. Happy Cutting.
