Beauty Tips for Handling Extreme Weather Part 2: Cold, Wind & Snow

Beauty Tips for Handling Extreme Weather Part 2: Cold, Wind & SnowAs the seasons change, so does the need for the types of hair, skincare, and other beauty products we use on a daily basis. But if you’re on your way to a winter wonderland vacation or a weekend getaway where the temperature is colder, there are a few tips and tricks that will come in handy. Taking care of your skin and hair according to the weather will keep you looking hot no matter how cold it is outside.

The most common reaction skin has to cold, snow and wind is dryness, cracking, and itching. All of these uncomfortable factors can be avoided if the right precautions are taken when it comes to your beauty regimen. Do research and find out what the weather will be like for the length of your trip and pack your items accordingly. Surprisingly, even the coldest climates will require sunscreen. Although it may not feel like summer, the sun’s rays do reflect off of the snow, which can then bounce back onto your skin and do just as much damage.

Skincare-wise, moisturizing is a must. When your skin is fully hydrated and moisturized, your complexion and the rest of your skin won’t suffer from the elements, especially with environmental pollutants such as wind and sun exposure. Anytime you plan on stepping out, whether it’s to snowboard or take a leisurely stroll around town, be prepared by using a good quality lip balm with SPF. Applying lip balm to your upper lip will also help keep that sensitive area from being prone to sunburn and windburn.

Because makeup tends to set better on skin than during the summer months, feel free to do as you please with your makeup palette. To avoid a dry complexion, opt for tinted moisturizers or a liquid foundation. Depending on how your skin reacts to cold weather, especially if you’re doing activities in the snow, skip the blush and bronzer - your cheeks will be rosy enough to create a natural glow. Clear lip gloss with a touch of pink or coral color always makes lips look amazing.

Hair care can be tricky when it comes to winter weather and the colder elements like snow. If you’re in a windy area, protect your hair with a beanie or other appropriate winter headwear. Winter weather can tend to make the hair and scalp dry, flaky and itchy. To avoid these discomforts during your trip, try not to wash your hair everyday and instead let your scalp’s natural oils moisturize your hair from roots to tips. If at all possible, avoid using too many heated styling products on your hair, such as curling irons and blow dryers, since this tends to make hair even more dry and brittle. Bring along hair care products that contain natural moisturizers to help your tresses stay healthy, shiny, hydrated and manageable. Some great ingredients to look for in shampoos, conditioners and other hair products are rosemary, chamomile and vitamins A, B, C, and E.
