The American Idol Look of Kelly Clarkson and How to Achieve it

The American Idol Look of Kelly Clarkson and How to Achieve itOn September 4th of 2002, a Texas teen captivated hearts as she sang her way to victory and became the first American Idol ever. Voted for by celebrities like Donald Trump and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, Kelly Clarkson beat out more than 10,000 other superstar hopefuls with her song, “A Moment Like This.”  Soon, fans everywhere were bombarding messageboards, praising her gorgeous looks and heading to the nearest salon to re-create the look. And why not?  Kelly’s highlighted brown locks and radiant glowing skin are a winning combination. While looks aren’t always everything, it certainly never hurts to feel like a winner and with just a little effort you can create Kelly Clarkson’s winning look.

The Hair:

To start off, the cut is a basic bob and should be all one length at about should level. Your hair should be slightly layered and framed around the face with minimal framing. Ends should be razored to give the hair, texture. Remember to have your hair trimmed at least every 8 weeks to keep the cut in tip-top shape.

The coloring is a highlighting technique known as “Paneling.” While some highlighting is okay to try at-home, this one is better off in the hands of a professional. The bold highlights are created using a slice pattern. Sections of hair are parted, then three bands of color are applied from top to bottom and around your head. If you’re worried about how this technique will look on you, try using a temporary hair color that rinses out in just a few shampoos.

The Makeup:

Start with a clean face and apply a foundation that best suits your skin tone. If you find that you need it, apply a concealer under your eyes to banish any dark circles you may have. To set the foundation, use a large makeup brush to lightly go over any areas that foundation was applied. Next, apply a pale pink or peach blush to the apples of your cheeks and sweep across and out to your hairline.

For the brows, use a brow pencil that matches closely to the color of your eyebrows. Fill in any areas where hairs have been plucked sparsely. Use quick short strokes to give the brows a more natural look.

For the eyes line the upper lids with brown eyeliner. Apply a peach shadow in the upper corner of your lid and pearl shadow under the brows to highlight eyes. Apply a pencil shadow in eggplant on the lower lash line and blend, for a smoky effect. Apply one coat of black mascara. For more noticeable lashes, try applying a few individual lashes to the outer corner of your upper eyes.

Finally, fill in lips with a violet shade of lipstick followed by a shade of rosy pink over that one.  Then line your lips with a nutmeg colored lip liner by following the shape of your lips. To complete the look, dab your lips with a pale pink gloss.

With the changing seasons, styles come and go as well. While the shoulder length bob will more than likely be around in the coming years, even that same basic bob deserves a fresh look, as Kelly Clarkson knows. For a winter do, Kelly was seen sporting a shorter version of her American Idol bob. The Twiggy punk version of the bob is a 2007 hairstyle trend that is cut very short in back with long bangs in the front. If neither of Kelly’s bobs are right for you, consult with your stylist for your own unique version of the bob and start a trend of your own!
