The world watched as Carrie Underwood transformed on the stage and screen of American Idol. Quickly after winning and releasing her first video, she seemed to have found her style – a soft blend of sleek, smooth blonde hair and natural makeup set off by frosted lips.
While Carrie loves to be herself in no makeup and comfy clothes, she also loves her on-stage look and enjoys the fun of transforming into any personality the stylists come up with. At a recent photo shoot, hairstylist Diego Da Silva captured Carrie’s personal style by keeping her look very easy and cool. He started with a thickening spray and then curled two-inch sections all over her head with a large barrel iron. He finished her looked by brushing through the curls until they were gentle, long waves. He chose not to use a finishing spray so her hair would have all the natural movement that defines her carefree style.
Makeup artist Brigitte Reiss-Anderson was responsible for Carrie’s edgy look on the shoot. She created what has become the signature style of Underwood – smoking, sultry eyes that are rimmed in color and barely-there color on her lips. The secret to recreating Carrie’s makeup is to keep the palate simple – few colors in a neutral family. Start with a beige highlighting color and fill-in your lids with a deep cinnamon. Using a slanted shadow brush, rim your bottom lashes with a thick but soft line of the cinnamon shadow. For added depth and to keep your eyes from looking tired, add a touch of cranberry to the middle of both upper and lower lashes. Use a charcoal liner just under the lash line. Add black mascara and, for real rock start wow, false lashes. On her cheeks, Reiss-Anderson used powder blush in a light apricot/melon shade. Blush is meant to highlight the contour of your cheeks and brighten your eyes. Apply the blush with an angled blush brush to the apples of your cheeks and sweep up along and just under the cheek bones. To really capture Carrie’s look, apply a luminous lip gloss in a barely-there shade that is as close to the color of your blush as possible. Gloss with a slight shimmer adds volume and reflects light to brighten your look.
