When creating a look, McMillan uses the same cocktail of products for almost every style: from his personal line shampoo, conditioner and smoothing serum; surf spray on the ends and dry shampoo on the roots to create a rough and sexy texture. From this beginning, her simple styles come together with very little work and are usually finished by Jen pulling a few stands of hair loose around her face.
To create your own version of her long, straight-down style. You’ve got to start with the dread blow out with the round brush, especially if you’ve got natural waves or curl. Even though this can be an enormous pain, it’s the only way to get the hair full and smooth at the root. It also creates the soft curves she’s so famous for wearing like she woke up with them. One tip Chris shares for this style is to tuck your hair behind your ears as it cools to keep it sleek and to avoid any feathering or whispies. Don’t be afraid to run your fingers through it with a little wax rubbed onto them to create a super smooth shine.
One way to jazz-up a long straight look is to add a creatively placed braid or twist. This is also the perfect way to cover bad bangs or an uncooperative do. A thick French braid straight across the forehead gets pinned back to keep it in place. Pull some hair over the pins and add curls with a small round brush – which creates a more natural look than a tight curl created with a curling iron. Twists can start anywhere and finish anywhere. They look great pulled over the hair and pinned at the back of your head or tucked under the hair where the pin is hidden. The twist has become the all-time great solution to a quick, but stylish hairdo or as a fix for a messed up attempt or wind blown mess!
Let’s talk ponies. Jennifer Aniston loves them. They are her “comfort zone” according to McMillan, and they couldn’t be easier to do. These days, messy is in. So grab your hair and pull it back. Whether you do bangs or not, the super smooth, tight ponytails of yesterday are done. A few bumps and stray strands are what you want. To get that perfect raise at the top of your head, wrap your elastic band ¼” away from your head; once it’s wrapped tightly, divide your pony in half and pull the two halves of hair to move the band to your head. Tease the hair just below the band and spritz some super hold hairspray into the middle of the pony. Presto!
