How to Look Great (But Not Made-up) At the Gym

How to Look Great (But Not Made-up) At the GymOkay girls, if we’re going to be completely honest with each other then we have to admit that getting dressed for the gym has caused a large percentage of us some distress. There is the ever-present debate that goes on (even if just in the back of our mind) about whether to be a “gym hottie” (a term we’ve given to those girls who come fully made-up and fully at risk that at any moment something could bounce right out of that low cut sports bra) or do we go in a guys’ ratty but oh-so-comfy tee and our old sneakers? According to model and pro volleyball player Gabrielle Reese, the answer is neither.

“If you dress well to exercise, you’ll feel better – and work out so much harder.” What’s “dressing well” to Reese? The foundation of her outfit is always black or navy pants made from high-quality, thick Lycra. A well-fitted pair of workout pants should be snug around the butt and thighs, looser just below the knee and slightly flared at the bottom. The hem should hit the tops of your well-fitted, never too worn down sneakers. If it’s too hot for long pants or if biking or spinning is a large part of your workout routine, opt for leggings that fit the same through the butt and thigh but end snuggly just below your knees.

Gabrielle is no-nonsense at the gym. It’s much sexier not to show it all off – and risk falling out when you bend over in a top that doesn’t fit and offer support and coverage. A much more appealing look is a well-fitted top that shows off your figure and sends the message that you’re there to work hard. Her choice is an athletic bra under a cotton tank. She prefers dark colors like green, blue or black so they coordinate well with each other when layered and also look good with her pants.

Sock are important too. Gabrielle’s advice: opt for ankle socks that reach no higher than the rim of your sneakers. When your socks show off your ankles, your legs and feet look less clunky. That’s important to a girl who wears size 11 ½ - her approach must work!

As for makeup, Reese always wears a light coat of mascara on her top lashes. It’s not a bad thing to want to look good. You just have to be confident enough in yourself to not feel the need to over do it and then be uncomfortable sweating because you’re loaded down with makeup. A quick swipe of lip balm helps keep your lips hydrated and looking fresh.

After a good workout, she advices changing into a comfy pair of flip flops or ballet slippers and a clean, well-fitted tee. That way you feel fresher and can enjoy the satisfaction of a good workout.
