The first thing to consider when it comes to getting colored contact lenses is whether you want to deal with disposable or annual replacement lenses. Disposables are favored by many and considered better for the eyes. As the name implies, disposable contacts can be worn one day or one week and then tossed into the trash. Disposable lenses tend to be thinner and less likely to get protein build-up, which decreases your chances for bacterial infections. Most colored contact lenses that are disposable can be worn longer than eight hours each day. Disposable lenses may work in your favor if you know that you will only be wearing your chosen color for a short time or plan on switching to a new color soon.
Annual replacement color contact lenses tend to be more expensive because of the work that goes into making them. These types of colored contact lenses are hand painted (disposable lenses have the color printed digitally) and allow for a more natural appearance. Many annual replacement color contact lenses are designed with varied colors and subtle details that create depth and make the eye look very natural.
People with naturally light eyes have the option of wearing either opaque or color contact lenses that are specially designed to enhance your current eye color. There are many types of contact lenses you can choose to enhance your eye color, such as disposable contacts that make your eyes appear brighter more sparkly (you can choose from different effects: moonlight, sunrise, autumn, radiance), and colored lenses that are designed with a painted pattern and blend of colors (sky blue, jade green, aquamarine, and violent blue). When choosing color contact lenses for light eyes be aware that some color enhancement lenses can actually make your eye color appear darker. You may want to opt for opaque lenses in soft greens or blues for a more natural look.
For those with naturally dark brown, green or blue eyes, opaque contact lenses will be your best bet, as enhancement color lenses may not be dramatic enough to show any visible results like they would with light colored eyes. Choose opaque shades like blue sapphire, green, and amethyst. If you want a softer appearance, opt for light colors such as soft greens or blues. For more dramatic color, violets, deep blues and deep greens are ideal. Keep in mind that if you have both dark eyes and dark skin, wearing light green or blue colored contact lenses will make you look very fake and unnatural. Instead, go for deep blues, greens and amethyst.
