“But It’s A Dry Cold…” The Desert Guide to Winter Skin and Hair Care

“But It’s A Dry Cold…” The Desert Guide to Winter Skin and Hair CareCaring for dry skin the desert is a battle that never ends no matter what season you’re in. While the summer heat is like a hair dryer blowing on you 24/7, winter brings colder temperatures that make the dry air even drier. To fight the battle and win, try these tips to moisturize and renew your skin.

·    H20. We can’t say it enough. Double your water intake in the desert. Your Vegas vacation will be much more enjoyable if you start increasing the amount of water you drink before you leave. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, keep drinking… water. Don’t think other fluids will replace your necessary water intake. In fact, anything with sugar will make you require even more.

·    Limit your alcohol. Even one drink can add to your dehydration. You’ll see it on your skin before you’ll feel it inside.

·    Invest in a quality humidifier. This will improve your sleep as well. Don’t be afraid to spritz a little water on your face and hair and even in the air. Any moisture will be beneficial.

·    Be sure to always have lip balm. Your lips are so susceptible to dry weather. If you find yourself without, rub your finger over your forehead or around your nose. Use your skin’s natural oils to soothe chapped lips.

·    Find a good neutralizing spritz. Most can be sprayed over makeup without causing runs or smears. Neutralizing your skin’s pH is crucial to maintaining a healthy glow.

·    Choose a moisturizer that lubricates your skin as well as it hydrates. Moisturizers that disappear instantly can’t cut it in the desert. A product that would be too greasy in other parts of the country will retain moisture and protect against the dry winds and cold.

·    Use a small amount of your moisturizer on your hair. It will tame frizzies and fly-aways and add moisture to your dry ends.

·    Invest in a leave-in moisture therapy for your hair. These can be found at most beauty supply stores and are a must when getting a color treatment at the salon.

·    Throw back to mom’s home remedy for dry, brittle hair. Mix mayo (full fat, no light or fat free) with an egg and coat your hair. You’ll smell like a picnic gone bad, but your hair will look better and be more resilient.

·    Socks and gloves! Find an excellent night cream that doesn’t soak into your skin as soon as you rub it on. Apply generously to your feet and sleep with light cotton socks on. Apply to your hands paying special attention to your cuticles, and slip on light cotton gloves. If you can’t sleep with them on, wear them during your favorite television show or while you read.
