Fall Rules for Cas-Chic

Fall Rules for Cas-ChicFitting in to the elite fashion conscious crowd isn’t as difficult as you might think. According to the newest designer for the Gap, Patrick Robinson, you can take everything you own and see it through different eyes so that it will only take a few key pieces to bring your present wardrobe into the upper echelons of casual-chic.

If you’re really serious about making your closet a temple of style and not just a dumping ground that you rummage through in desperation for something new, you’ve got to start by understanding what goes with what. Start by emptying your closet onto your bed and dividing it into outfits. Then you’ll see what you have and what you need. Don’t head into this adventure thinking you need everything new – you don’t. It’s way more fun to realize what you do have and then add smart pieces to that.

Proportions are a fundamental element of style. Learn what looks too heavy, chunky or spacious. Wear a mini skirt that’s only slightly longer than your long sweater. The sweater shouldn’t look like your dad’s – those days ended in junior high. We’re talking about shapely cardigans paired with cotton T-s and a fringed scarf. Go for knee boots and you’ll be perfectly balanced.

If you still love flared pants, then make sure they’re long – they should cover a lot of your foot and hit the floor (not drag on it) at the heel. This gives the illusion of long, lean legs. Pair it with shirts no longer than just below the belt. Layer away!

One of the basic elements of fall is a chunky sweater that’s light enough to wear indoors. Don’t be afraid to throw a denim or plaid shirt under a chunky, short-sleeved sweater – that’s hot!

If you’re a skinny pant or straight-leg girl, give your outfit some volume on top. Remember to add volume with layers, not one enormous piece. Don’t overlook the belts. They look great as high as right under the breast line and as low as your hips. Want to really make a statement? Tie your belt in a knot rather than cinch it in the holes.

Keep wearing your tanks and camis from summer. They will look great with almost any pants if you layer them and add a sassy scarf. And while you’re thinking scarf, consider calling more than just traditional scarves in to accessorize. Just about anything goes when you’re looping material around your neck and chest this fall, so be creative.

Color is in, so use it to your benefit. Make red shoes work with your purple dress by adding bright canary yellow tights. Yes, it’s true; you really can go that far with color this year and not be asked for your autograph, Pipi Longstocking. Once you get comfortable with color, you’ll feel great being bold. Not sure how to make it work; still a little shy? Cheat and buy a few fashion mags. There will be no end to the color combos this season.
