All About the Emo

All About the EmoAs the years go by we come across certain popular terms to describe certain groups of people, such as “rockers,” “jocks,” “Goths,” etc. One of the latest terms to pop up within the last few years is the term “emo.” Often misunderstood and mislabeled, the term emo can be difficult to decipher but there are certain factors that are commonplace within this group, which can include wardrobe, makeup, and hairstyles.

The word “emo” is short for “emotional” and began as a type of music. As emo music gained more popularity, its fans took the emo trend and transformed it into a way to dress and even a lifestyle. Dressing in emo style is often referred to as the “scene” look - for example, “scene hair.” As with most groups, the emo trend is very popular among teens. There are no hard and fast rules for dressing, acting, or appearing emo. In fact, there are different types of emo looks, such as the dressy emo, indie emo, and nerdy emo. It also depends on where you are located, since different areas have its own definition of what it takes to be emo.

Some people believe that emos are the same as Goths, which isn’t quite accurate. Goths by nature are drawn to the darker, morbid side of things, whereas emos tend to be associated with feelings of sadness, depression, or other emotions. The color black is hugely popular among emos and many sport dyed black hair (guys and girls). When it comes to hairstyles bob cuts are ideal as well as spiky hair and brightly colored long bangs or streaks of hues throughout the hair. In terms of clothing, emos are known for sporting form fitting clothes - the tighter, the better. As a result, many emos - but not all - are super skinny. The vegan lifestyle is also a commonality among emos. Tight fitting tee shirts are popular, especially if they have the name of your favorite band on them. Pair these with dark skinny jeans and a pair of Converse or Vans sneakers and you have your basic emo style.

For girls, makeup is also important in being an emo. Dark colors are best, especially when it comes to eye makeup. Emo girls are well known for sporting a lot of black eyeliner. Add on a few coats of mascara and dark eye shadow and you’ll be all set. Both male and female emos love to accessorize. This includes belts, chains, bracelets, homemade jewelry, and plain messenger bags. Studs, piercings, and tattoos also come with emo territory.

It is also encouraged to try and develop your own sense of emo style. No one wants to be labeled a “poser” or someone pretending to be something they really aren’t. The more involved you become with the emo scene, the easier it will be for you to blend in while remaining your own person.
