It’s all about the extra touches like tying a scarf and knotting a belt, choosing the right wash for your jeans, and cut for your pinstriped suit. It’s about knowing what boot heel works and how to walk when you’re wearing them. It’s about attitude and thoughtfulness.
Start with daywear. Poufs and pleats make a day suit stylish and expressive. If your suit isn’t from this season, create your own pleats with a few quick stitches at the waist. Use a belt at the waist of your jacket to build pouf.
Let silver dress-down your morning jewelry. Choose silver necklaces that range from a single thin strand to a mass of giant beads in a chocker. Over a whispy, silky tee, silver scales back the intensity of gold. Wear this with black, stretch, 5-pocket jeans. Black is the new blue and is acceptable in the office and on the dance floor.
Think of a belt as a layering tool that can wrap around a dress more than once or be knotted so it can hang down a sweater. A men’s belt that is long and pliable is the stylish choice.
Scarves are a necessity as long as you know how to tie them. Lay the scarf around the back of your neck and let it fall over your shoulders in the front. Wrap it around your neck twice, leaving both ends draped over the front of your shoulders again. Lop the ends in a half knot under your neck like a necktie to draw attention to your face.
Cover it all with a trench. It should be squared at the shoulders and slightly stiff. Be sure your skirt never falls below the hem and wear narrow pants to keep your look lean.
For the weekend you simply aren’t allowed to wear dresses or skirts or black if you’re headed for the country during cool or cold weather. You’ve got to have slouchy jeans, motorcycle boots or Wellies, waffle-knit sweaters and a chunky scarf. Headed for the city this weekend? You get to take your skinny black jeans, ballet slippers or ankle boots, a thin sweater over a tee and a thin scarf.
Don’t forget the attitude. It’s free and it’s indispensable when it comes to style. A few must-dos: Stand up tall. People notice anything up high. Always face forward when you have to walk through a row of seats. Wear red when you want to flirt and use candle whenever possible. Men think dilated pupils are sexy – we don’t have to know why to use it to our advantage. Flash your wrists – they put off pheromones and that’s biological sex appeal that is endlessly stylish.
