How to Find Your Own Fashion Style

How to Find Your Own Fashion StyleBeing fashionable means different things to different people. Some have a natural ability to pick out what the next trends will be on their own, while others tend to rely on what the fashion experts have to say. However, you don’t have to be a natural born fashionista to find your own sense of style. That’s the beauty of fashion: it is what you make of it. With the following tips you’ll be able to establish your own sense of style that caters to your tastes and no one else’s.

Oftentimes the challenge for people that are not very fashion savvy is learning what is what. From the terminology for various articles of clothing to the names of fabrics and designers, the average consumer may get lost in the mix while watching a fashion show, browsing through a fashion magazine, reading articles about the latest trends or even while shopping in the store. The first tip to follow is to remember that it is not necessary to master everything related to the fashion industry. As the name implies, finding your “own sense of style” means just that - finding things that you like and that are important to you. So if you could care less about what words like ruched, asymmetrical and A-line mean, don’t worry about it and move on.

Another helpful tip is to avoid becoming intimidated. Flipping through the high fashion magazines may not be the best way to find your sense of style. The clothing advertised in these publications tends to be over the top, expensive and not necessarily ensembles that are meant for everyday wear. Depending on your lifestyle and personal preference, choose catalogs and fashion magazines that reflect what you like - not what the fashion experts tell you that you should like. Even if it is a department store catalog, the fashions showcased will be more realistic for everyday wear and will give you reference images that will be better suited for your wardrobe.

Making a list of what you like when it comes to clothing is also a helpful way to figure out what type of style you prefer. Think about what led you to choose some of the clothes in your closet. Do you like clothes that are comfortable and stylish? Do you love fancy materials, prints and patterns? Do simple styles do it for you or are you eager to try and replicate what you see on the catwalk and in fashion magazines? The answers to such questions will help point you in the right direction. Once you have figured this part out, you’ll be able to shop accordingly for those styles. Remember, having your own sense of style means picking the clothing items that you like. Even if it isn’t “in” on the fashion scene, as long as you feel good in what you’re wearing, that’s all that matters.
