Style Details That Make You A Diva

Style Details That Make You A DivaYou don’t need a whole new wardrobe to make you a style diva. Just ask the style divas – they all agree that real fashion is found in the details. It’s the tiny little touches that many wouldn’t even notice enough to be able to talk about, but, when seen as part of the whole ensemble, they make an outfit something to be noticed and remembered.

Start at the bottom. A great pair of shoes can take any ordinary outfit to the next level of wow. To dress up even your favorite pair of shoes use shoe clips featuring anything imaginable from flowers to feathers to rhinestones and beads. Shoes clips are versatile and most will not damage even expensive material. You’ll be amazed at the transformation that a simple clip can create. Most will think you’ve got on a brand new pair of shoes. Don’t limit yourself to the front toe. Add the clips to the side or to the heel if it’s comfortable. Depending on the material of the shoe, double sided tape offers another solution for dressing up the backs with lightweight flower appliqués.

Kick your plain black nylons or tights up a notch by adding small style details to the ankles or up the back of your calf. Use a small square of double sided tape or a dot of rubber cement (yes, it really does work) to add tiny flowers or beads to nylons. For heavier tights, you can carefully attach with a small stitch of thread.

Hems go from unnoticed to fashion statements when you add silk. While this detailing takes a little know-how, it’s well worth the investment of time and a sewing machine. Adding scrunched silk to the sleeves and neckline of a simple cotton tee turns a $10 jersey into a top you can pair with a $100 skirt. When a plain skirt hem is trimmed with a band of silk it is transformed and worthy of Grandma’s pearls. Jeans never looked so good as when you add a silk lining to the cuffs. All of these details could be cut from less than ½ yard of fabric, making these one of the most cost effective and fashion savvy options.

Belts change whatever they’re added to – pants, sweaters, jackets. A well placed belt accents your figure by creating a sexy silhouette. But great belts are hard to find and the really fun ones are often too expensive. So make your own for half the cost and twice the fun. Cut and finish the edges of a band of your favorite material. Clip it together with a fancy button.   Attach fabric appliqués to a wide ribbon in an unexpected color to belt a cardigan. Hold it together in the back with a piece of Velcro covered by a small seashell or just tie it in a loose knot. The possibilities are limitless and the more creative you are, the more impressive and memorable your belt will be.

Anything can become a broach, so let your creativity run wild. One stylist proposed that you could wear the same plain tee shirt every day of the week and no one would notice if you wore just the right broach each day. The goal is to find eye-catching items that are light enough to sit nicely at your shoulder. Don’t stop with just one. Arrange three of whatever you’ve found in a triangle pattern using varying sizes and colors. For perfect placement, position the highest of the three just outside the widest point on your collar bone.
