They were here but they were not without the controversy that continues to this day. In fact, in 1966 there was such a demand for miniskirt equality the British Society for the Preservation of the Miniskirt (yes, we are serious) picketed a Christian Dior fashion show that featured longer coats and dresses. Little did they know – or because of their efforts – the mini would not disappear for even one season in the years that have followed.
Actresses and models like Twiggy and Lynn Redgrave have made waves by daring to go mini on the silver screen and in photo shoots. They broke some stereotypes about the girls that wore miniskirts and created others that those who proudly wear them still enjoy today. The effects of the mini were never limited to the fashion world or petrified fathers of teenage daughters. In 1967 the mayor of New York was quoted as saying that the miniskirt was popular because “it enabled young ladies to run faster – and because they might have to.” Just two years later, a group of high school girls were suspended in Tennessee for wearing their minis to school, so they took their case to the courts. And they were not alone. Girls fought for their right to wear short skirts all over the world. College students in Bangkok risked losing points if they dared to show up on campus in a mini in 1998. It wasn’t just teens and college students fighting for their right to bare legs; as late as 2002 employees who worked in the Lithuanian parliament building were banned from wearing miniskirts. Last year, American cheerleaders had to wear bodysuits under their cheer skirts if they wanted to stay in India to cheer for their cricket team.
Not everyone has taken the short, short skirt issue seriously. Across the US women ran the Skirtchaser 5K race in which women wearing miniskirts were given a head start and chased to the finish by the men. So whether your skirt is a 10 inch micro mini or a longer 19 inch style, your right to wear it has been battled and won throughout the years.
This year, winter minis are paired with heavy, opaque tights and leggings and knee-length boots. They are more of an accessory than a bottom half of an outfit in micro short lengths. Look for frayed colored denim and traditional school-girl plaids.
