There are… well, right now there is only one woman we know of who can wear sparkling tights and not be mocked. It’s Zooey Deschanel. She has an unparalleled ability to dress in amazingly short dresses with, yes, sparkling tights and almost child-like princess accessories and still look put-together, stylish and lovely. Anyone thinking about imitating her look should think again. She’s a fashion enigma.

Zooey is making a lot of appearances these days on red carpets and premiers and she never shows up looking the same, unless you want to qualify cute-chic as her “always looking the same”. Let’s start with her bangs. She looks her best when they are chunky and blunt with a slight part or two. The rest is long and straight or with messy waves. This second grade style works perfectly with her doll-like face and looks amazing whether she’s in casual wear or a Christian Dior dress and Channel pumps. That’s right, we said pumps. She can pull them off and no one even thinks about their Grandma like they would if anyone else stepped out in them.

One thing to be said for Zooey (as if there could only ever be one thing), is that she enjoys dressing herself. She’s always got a say in what she’s wearing. She owns her style and she loves it. It matches perfectly with her quirky personality. Especially when she’s singing in the folk band She & Him -isn’t that just a priceless detail about her that makes you like her even more?

It’s that personality and her perfect little frame that makes her able to make a public appearance in a pure white satin Erin Featherston dress with a Playboy bunny-looking plum of white poofy feathers over one shoulder and the infamous sparkling tights. She’s also worn a lei as an accessory to a film festival – yes, it was in Maui, but no one else tried to get away with that.

Zooey loves to shimmer and shine and she loves to make a statement with her fashion. She can wear an outfit reminiscent of Beetlejuice couture, an elegant gown (not without a few touches of fringe or beading that makes it her own) a swing-line coat with a skirt short enough to just skim the hem that makes her look like a baby doll in a Christmas display or a vintage coat. No matter what she’s wearing or what she’s accessorized with, she stands tall and demure and sexy-sweet, the envy of any woman who has ever wanted to be a cutie-pie after the age of five or a chic, sultry beauty in a short skirt and tiara.
