We all have our favorite fragrances and whether it’s perfume of cologne, there are ways we can preserve our signature scents and allow our fragrances to last longer. Many of the everyday things we do with our fragrance bottles/containers actually decrease the effectiveness and the shelf life of our scents. By using the following steps, you’ll be able to make your fragrance last longer and enjoy it for a long time to come.
It may seem like common sense but many of us do not properly store our fragrances after purchasing them. We tend to store them in random places in our bathroom, home or even carry it around in purses or end up leaving them in the car. The best way to prevent your favorite scent from prematurely expiring is to keep it away from light and heat on a daily basis. That means storing your perfume or cologne bottle in your bathroom cupboard. Even leaving it out on your vanity or bathroom counter will expose the contents to light and various temperatures, especially when taking hot showers or baths. Keep it cool and in the dark and your scent will be prolonged and remain intact.
Even the way we apply our fragrance can determine how long it will last over time. Aside from traditionally spraying on perfume or cologne, many of us use our fingertips to dab on our fragrance onto our necks, the back of the ears, etc. However, this seemingly harmless gesture can actually have a negative effect on your fragrance. When our fingertips come into contact with the fragrance, the skin’s oils get into the bottle/container, which can alter the natural state of the scent. This can result in your perfume smelling different over time. A better way to apply cologne or perfume is to use a cotton ball so that the scent isn’t altered or contaminated.
Spraying clothes with perfume before putting it on is a common habit that many people have. But this doesn’t necessarily make your scent last longer and depending on what kind of fabric you’re wearing, it can ruin or stain your outfit. Avoid spraying perfume or cologne on silk and other delicate fabrics and instead spray your body first and then put on your clothing. Over the course of the day or evening the scent will have a chance to absorb into your skin where it will gradually develop and release its fragrance naturally. Additionally, it is best to spray your fragrance from the ankles up. You may not be aware of it but scent has a tendency to rise upwards. Begin at your ankles and spritz a small amount and work your way up your body. However, keep your hand light. Spraying too much perfume will have the adverse effect. Good quality perfumes and colognes release its scent over time so keep it light.
