The Celebrity/Fragrance Relationship
Britney, Beyonce, P. Diddy, and even sports stars, like David Beckham and Derek Jeter have jumped on the fragrance bandwagon—and for good reason. The multi-billion dollar fragrance industry is an easy way to make a mint. And, the celebrities aren’t the only ones seeing the payoff. Fragrance companies are also enjoying the relationship. Celebrity endorsements sell products. They always have and always will.
Even so, slapping a celebrity’s name on a bottle isn’t enough. The success of and market longevity of a fragrance always depends on how big and how marketable a star is. Many fragrance companies look for celebrities that already have a huge fan base, and therefore, a ready-made customer base. Think Celine Dion or Jennifer Lopez. Other companies look for the rising star of the moment. Donald Trump, Paris Hilton, and former Apprentice and Survivor contestants have all launched their own fragrances.
The Latest in Celebrity Fragrances
The latest celebrity fragrances bank not on one celebrity, but on groups of them. In partnership with Warner Bros., AMC Beauty has developed two fragrances based on The O.C. television show that airs on Fox. Highly anticipated, the fragrances are known simply as “The O.C. for Him” and “The O.C for Her”.
Coty also had the same idea and recently developed “Forbidden Fruit”, a scent based on the wildly popular television hit Desperate Housewives. The fragrance is a fruity floral with touches of, what else, wisteria.
