What you Should Know About Fragrances in Skincare Products

fragrances productsWe all know what it`s like to walk into a beauty & body shop and have that fantastic olfactory experience. We get a wave of scents that remind us of every flower imaginable. Lotions, body washes, body mists - each with the promise of making us smell like that when we leave the store and beyond. But while these products make our noses happy, our skin is singing a different tune.

As a general rule, fragrances added to skin-care products do absolutely nothing positive for your skin. I know; bummer. They are merely there to make the product smell good, therefore making the product more attractive to consumers. Not only do fragrances do nothing for you, but they actually have an adverse effect on skin and should be avoided at all costs. Fragrances can leave your skin dry, red and generally irritated. If you use products with fragrance and you skin just plain doesn`t feel good, that`s probably one reason why.

This may be obvious, but products you`ll want to stay away from are those that say fragrance, perfume or parfume on the bottle. Those are the easy ones and those labels aren`t always so black and white. You`ll have to use your sleuthing skills and also look out for those products that boast essential oils or plant extracts. Those are just fancy ways of saying perfume, and they will do just as much damage to your skin. Marketers will even get specific on you to try to disguise the fact that there are perfumes in the product. They will indicate ingredients such as lemon oil, wintergreen oil or cardamom oil, but again, these are all still fragrances that will put unneeded stress on your skin.

In addition to fragrances, the other known ingredient in most products that promote irritation are preservatives. But even though they are a cause of irritation, unlike fragrances, preservatives can`t be avoided. If manufacturers left out preservatives, there are far worse problems your skin could develop because of the molds and bacteria that would grow without those preservatives.

Overall, avoid fragrances for the sake of your skin, and those that already have sensitive skin should be especially careful to avoid products with fragrances. Check labels - there are many product lines out there that carry fragrance and irritant-free solutions to skin care.
