Because exposure to the sun increases the appearance of freckles, it was once considered a sign of a low social status to have freckles in the summer - they announced that you were a field worker and had to do manual labor for a living. Not so in 2008! Whether they are sprinkled delicately across the bridge of your nose or smattered from cheek to cheek, freckles are a compliment to the bronzed look that pale skinned faces pay so much to achieve. Freckles may be even more valuable to the summer face that chooses to go UV-free and stay out of the sun. They are an immediate and natural burst of color to bare skin and add a jolt to blue or green eyes by reflecting attention off of the cheeks.
While not all freckle-faced beauties love their natural coloring, they are certainly making it clear that freckles are as lovely as any skin tone. Two of the most prominent faces that display their freckles are Sarah Ferguson and Julianne Moore. In fact, Moore recently published a children’s book called Freckleface Strawberry (Bloomsbury). The heroine is a freckle-faced girl who must overcome her own feelings about freckles as well as the teasing of other children – a common problem for those with moderate to abundant freckling. But this season should help put a stop to that mindset. Freckles are not only showing up in ads for top designers, perfumes, makeup and vacation spots, they are becoming a reflection of rest and relaxation as these ads show bare skinned models (guys and girls) who are too busy having fun and being beautiful to bother covering up their God-given beauty marks. Freckles are fresh and clean and not everyone can have them, so they are exclusive as well.
Freckles are not limited to only the fair skinned red-heads. Olive skinned Penelope Cruz has freckles as does, Lucy Liu and Jaime Foxx. So proudly display your freckles if you’ve got them! Do be careful though because freckles are your skin’s defense against the sun. The coloring which causes freckles is produced by melanin, which increases its appearance when epidermal cells called melanocytes are exposed to the sun’s UV rays. When freckles begin to increase it’s your skin’s way of telling you that it’s being damaged say dermatologists. But don’t fear your freckles. When they increase it’s not a sign of malignant changes like those associated with moles that change color or size. Your skin is already predisposed to the coloring and it uses your freckles to warn you of dangerous sun exposure to your skin. Use lots of sunscreen and let your freckles tell you when you’ve had enough sun for the day, but, most importantly, enjoy your skin it’s hot, it’s fresh, it’s one of the sweetest summer looks this year.
