Your Fruit Basket for Beauty Part 1: Avocado

Your Fruit Basket for Beauty Part 1: AvocadoAvocados are made for so much more than your favorite dip or even a traditional facial mask. Even though this fruit is known by strange nicknames, such as the “alligator pear,” its abilities when it comes to beauty and skincare are anything but strange. With a little avocado in your life, your skin will be well on its way to superior health.

The fascination with avocados for reasons other than being edible goes all the way back to the ancient Aztec, Mayan and Incan civilizations. The women of this time period enjoyed the use of avocados as a beauty aid that helped with stressed skin, hair issues, skin rejuvenation, and other beauty problems. Containing beneficial oils, it’s no wonder that the avocado is the perfect ingredient when it comes to taking care of the skin and hair.

Like many other ingredients in skin care, avocados come in more than just its regular fruit form. Avocado oil is especially beneficial to the skin. A natural moisturizer, avocado oil is perfect for skin that has been damaged by the sun or suffers from age spots and scarring. Filled with plant steroids, avocado oil works within the skin to smooth, soften and promote a lasting moisturizing effect. In anti-aging, avocado oil has been clinically shown to aid in the increase of collagen in the skin, creating a plumper, suppler, more youthful-looking complexion for those with mature skin. Its ideal emollient properties also make avocado oil easily absorbable in skin tissue and can be very beneficial not just to those with mature skin types, but skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and those with dry, itchy skin.

Avocado in its natural fruit form is a natural skincare lover’s dream come true. The possibilities are endless when it comes to using avocados in skincare. You’ll find hundreds of variations of homemade recipes involving avocado as a main ingredient online. One of the most common beauty uses for avocados involves reducing inflammation and puffiness of the eye area. Just applying a peeled slice of avocado under each eye for 20 minutes gradually reduces redness, irritation and puffiness… all without any hassles or spending big money! Used alone as a facial mask, avocado works wonders. By mashing half of an avocado, applying it to your face, and rinsing after 15 minutes will leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed. Oily skin types can refine this traditional facial mask recipe by combining half of an avocado, one egg white, and one teaspoon of lemon juice and applying to the face. For best results, let the mixture sit for 20 minutes before rinsing. This fruit isn’t just limited to the skin - avocado works well when it comes to hair treatments as well. To spruce up your tresses, mash and combine one avocado, ½ teaspoon of olive oil, and one egg yolk. Apply this mixture to dry hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Afterwards, rinse and shampoo and condition as usual. Your hair will come out shiny, silky, and soft.
