Halloween Makeup and Your Skin

Halloween Makeup and Your SkinHalloween is upon us again and in recent years more adults than ever are now partaking in the ghoulish holiday in addition to children. If you’re in the stages of prepping your costume and overall look, you may want to take some time to evaluate your options when it comes to costume makeup and the effect it may have on your complexion.

Costume makeup comes in a variety of forms and can be found in any store or online retailer but it is vital to know what it contains and if it will cause a negative skin reaction. Those with sensitive skin should be especially careful about what Halloween makeup goes onto their complexion. It’s helpful to know if you have an allergy to latex. Many Halloween masks are made of latex and any allergic reactions can turn ugly. If you are allergic to latex, your next best alternative is to use hypo-allergenic facial makeup. However, it is also good to play it safe and test this type of makeup beforehand as well. Do a patch test in order to see if your face will react. If so, be sure to wash off the product immediately and return the product to the store for a refund.

Another type of Halloween makeup many use is glue. If your costume calls for using special glue to adhere a beard or other fake facial hair to your face, you may want to double check the ingredients and how your skin may react to it. Although this type of glue is formulated for the face, you can still suffer from redness, rashes and blemishes. If possible, try to find a product that comes with spirit gum and adhesive remover. These items are specially made to gently remove any adhesive from the skin. Read the directions and take your time when it comes to removing such makeup. Doing otherwise can result in skin damage.

For those planning on wearing Halloween makeup, be sure to apply a good primer to the skin in order to create a barrier between your complexion and the makeup. Many Halloween makeup products are oily, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. The primer will prevent this from happening and also makes for easier removal at the end of the night. When it comes to putting makeup on your eyes, be wary of putting Halloween makeup around your eye area. This part of your face is super sensitive and harsh ingredients can lead to inflammation and raw skin.

Just as it is important to never sleep with regular daytime makeup on, you should be sure to thoroughly cleanse your complexion of all Halloween makeup before hitting the sack. Because of the staying power of some makeup, you may need to do a few rounds of cleansing to effectively remove all traces from your skin. After you’ve removed the makeup, be sure to exfoliate and apply a generous amount of moisturizer to keep your skin from becoming dehydrated from the hours of heavy makeup.
