Hollywood and Madison Avenue… Are they Finally Getting it Right?

Hollywood and Madison AvenueWhat woman over fifty didn’t cheer when Keanu Reeves made a play for Diane Keaton in Somehting’s Gotta Give? It gave women everywhere a hope that they still had something worth giving. Now people throughout the world are seeing older women advertising beauty products designed for the mature audience. Dove has even created a line of pro-age beauty products, because in their words, “beauty has no age limit.”

Could it possibly be that Hollywood and Madison Avenue are finally getting the message - that a large segment of the population is over fifty?  In addition, not only are they over “a certain age”, but they have money to spend! They don’t want to see a fifteen year old pitching wrinkle-removal cream. What possibly could those models know about crow’s feet? The cosmetic industry is now plucking the most gorgeous specimens from Hollywood’s over fifty pools to advertise their new cosmetic lines. Who could argue that Kim Bassinger, Sharon Stone, and Susan Sarandon are too old to sell beauty products? Most twenty-five year olds would give their eyeteeth to have the natural beauty – the fine features, the flawless skin - and the vitality of these women.

The rocking chair brigade of our mothers’ time has been replaced with active career women, who not only care about their families but their looks as well. This is not lost on the cosmetic industry. For years they have produced cosmetics to help women improve with age. Now they are actually using these women to promote their products. Christie Brinkley is as lovely as ever as the face of Cover Girl. Women over fifty feel as if they grew up with her. They can relate.

Female baby boomers are smart. They realize that even though their bodies and faces have changed, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While most women would like to have the body they had as a teenager, they realize that looking good is not reliant on being a certain size. It’s more important to take care of oneself, eat right, exercise, create a personal style, and enjoy all that life has to offer. Age has its privileges and with the boomer generation, they have the finances to back them. It’s about time that Hollywood and Madison Avenue take notice. Women over fifty are interested in looking good. The film industry and advertisers are banking on it.
