How to Keep Your Smile Healthy

How to Keep Your Smile HealthyGoing to the dentist’s office isn’t fun for many. One of the best ways to avoid sitting in that dreaded dental chair is to do right by your teeth on a daily basis. When your teeth are properly taken care of, you can limit your trips to the dentist’s office to simple checkups. Find out what you can do to keep your smile right and keep things moving.

In addition to regularly brushing and flossing, it is important to pay attention to your teeth and gums. When you know what your teeth and gums are trying to tell you, you can quickly and effectively find a remedy that will prevent the symptoms from getting worse and needing the professional attention from your dentist.

If you suffer from bad breath or dryness of the tongue or lips, this could be a sign of problems to come. Being able to produce enough saliva is essential in providing your mouth with its own natural antibacterial, acid neutralizing cleanser. Saliva also contains helpful minerals that naturally strengthen your tooth enamel. Medical studies show that women in their 50s and older tend to not produce enough saliva, which can lead to bad breath and other tooth and gum problems. If the symptoms aren’t bad enough to see your doctor or dentist, try chewing on sugarless candy or gum that is sweetened with xylitol, which is the alcoholic form of a sweetener called xylose, found in chewing gum and diabetic products. To combat minor bad breath brush your tongue daily with toothpaste like you would your teeth. Be sure to brush the top of your tongue as well as underneath and as far back as you can reach. Tongue scraping devices can also be purchased at the store for these purposes.

If you suffer from sensitive teeth and gums, it is important that you go the extra mile to make sure your teeth and gums are happy. The culprit of sensitive teeth and gums is normally due to bacterial disease that often goes unnoticed. When bacteria build up at the base of your teeth, this can lead to bleeding while brushing. If untreated, this can result in the loosening of the gum tissue and eating away at the ligaments and bone that hold the teeth in place. The best way to avoid sensitive teeth and gums from turning into a bigger problem is to get your teeth professionally deep cleaned and use a daily antibacterial rinse. Unfortunately, the seriousness of this condition may require you to visit your dentist more frequently than you’d care to but only by doing this can you keep yourself from developing worse symptoms later on. Using over-the-counter fluoride rinse and special toothpastes made for sensitive gums and teeth can also help. Flossing constantly and using a toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles allow you to brush without causing more damage.

When you experience a twinge of pain in your teeth, it’s never a pleasant feeling and one that you should pay close attention to. Because the teeth are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria, it is important to note whether your teeth have developed any cracks that can make them more vulnerable. Decay in a cracked tooth can happen quickly and can cause serious pain when the tooth’s nerve is attacked. Consistently brushing, flossing and using a daily fluoride rinse can keep your teeth strong and crack-free. But if you experience any type of tooth pain, contact your dentist immediately so the area can be inspected and treated if necessary.
