Learning About Laser Eye Surgery

Learning About Laser Eye SurgeryFor those who don’t have perfect vision, glasses are often the solution. However, as fashionable as this type of eyewear can be, having to deal with them can be a pain. Contact lenses are another solution but not many people want the hassle of cleaning them, taking them out, putting them in, and taking care of them. When these two alternatives don’t mesh, you have a third option: laser eye surgery. But it isn’t for everyone and it helps to do some research beforehand.

If you’re seeking a treatment that can correct your eye problems, then laser eye surgery could be worth looking into. This procedure uses a special laser that corrects common eye conditions by shaping the cornea of the eye. As a result of the surgery, a patient’s vision will dramatically improve to the point where there isn’t a need to rely on glasses or contact lenses as much if at all. Laser eye surgery is ideal for those suffering from the following eye issues: farsightedness, nearsightedness, and blurred vision due to problems within the cornea.

There are a number of different types of laser eye surgery procedures. The most common are PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis). PRK uses a laser to remove tissue from the eye’s surface in order to change the way the cornea curves. LASIK involves creating a thin, hinged flap on the eye’s surface, which is lifted, allowing the laser to penetrate underneath to reshape the eye. Afterwards, the flap is put back in place and acts as a bandage. While LASIK is one of the most popular forms of laser eye surgery available, PRK is starting to become a widely used procedure as well due to the fact that this procedure does not involve the use of a surgical flap in the eye’s surface. Medical studies also show that patients who have undergone PRK showed faster nerve regeneration in the eye’s surface afterwards, as well as being a safer procedure for patients with really thin corneas.

Think you’re ready for getting laser eye surgery? The first step you should take is to find a licensed and reputable laser eye surgeon in your area. Make a list of the ones you come across and set up a consultation with at least two or three places. Have your questions ready and make sure the surgeon answers all of your questions until you have a greater understanding of the procedure. Ask for references and talk to previous patients to see how their experiences were. Once you find a surgeon you are comfortable with, he/she will go over your case with you and help you determine whether you are a good candidate or not for the process. The ideal age range for potential laser eye surgery patients is between 20-30 years of age. For those 40 and older, multiple vision correction treatments may be needed, depending on the severity of the damage that needs to be corrected.
