Add Your Home to the Green Movement

Add Your Home to the Green MovementYou don’t have to be filthy rich or a well known celebrity in order to turn your home into a more Earth friendly environment. No matter what your favorite room in the house is, you can transform each part of your home into a greener environment. From small things like the products you use and your daily lifestyle routine, you can easily teach your family how to maintain a home that works with the environment and not against it. You’d be surprised by how simple the process can be!

Did you know that by using the right bed sheets, you can help the environment? It’s true! Using sheets made of toxic materials such as resin and petroleum-based fibers like polyester are bad for the planet. Avoid sheets labeled “dry clean only” because this practice emits a lot of toxic fumes. If you can’t live without dry cleaning, consider searching for a location that offers green dry cleaning. Don’t worry, they’re out there! In place of these troublesome fabrics, opt for natural, organic fibers, as well as pure linen. These types of fabrics are also better for you and allow your skin to breathe and effectively absorb moisture, such as sweat. You can also invest in an organic cotton mattress and pillows made of organic, natural fibers. You may not realize it but your mattress contains a lot of fire retardants, pesticides, herbicides, formaldehyde, and stain-resistance solvents. What does all that mean? Bad news for you, your health, and the environment.

It may take some time to get used to, but it is important to break your family’s habit of turning to the air conditioning or heater when the temperatures get too hot or cold. When the temperature outside is fairly pleasant, open up some windows around the house. You’ll be letting in plenty of fresh air, which will circulate around your home, as well as lower your heat and AC bill.

Many homeowners are saving up their money, ripping out their carpets, and installing hardwood floors. Why? Carpets, while comfortable and traditional, can carry a lot of harmful chemicals, gasses, and allergens, such as pet dander. Hardwood floors cut down on allergies, keep your home fresher, and if you miss your carpet, you can go shopping for fashionable throw rugs to accent the room.

Another great way to effectively turn your home green is to replace all of your cleaning products to ones that are biodegradable. You can also do the same for your skincare and personal care products, as well as your baby products. For the ladies, switch to cosmetic items that come in containers that can be recycled. Better yet, choose cosmetic products that come with refills and anytime you receive a package in the mail, reuse that cardboard box instead of tossing it in the trash.
