Because you’re in an educational environment, there is no need for going overboard when it comes to makeup. While most teachers don’t care to bother with makeup to begin with, there are those who want to experiment with their makeup look but aren’t sure how to do it without looking obvious or overdone. Due to the atmosphere of your job, stick to the all natural look - this is not only easy to pull off, it’s still professional enough for the workplace/classroom. If you can get away with it, don’t worry about foundation or powder. Tinted moisturizer works well for a natural appearance. Decide whether you want to play up your eyes or lips. If you choose the eyes, remember that for the all natural look, less is more. Smokey makeup or other outrageous styles are out-of-place for the classroom so skip the dramatic eye makeup. Instead, stick to using safe colors such as golds, browns, light purples or coral, depending on your skin tone. One or two layers of mascara are all that is needed to enhance your peepers. Stay away from heavy eye liner, either on the top or bottom.
For the lips, choose a matte shade that works well with the color of your complexion or your outfit. If you want to add shine, put just a drop. You don’t want to go too shiny. Or you can choose to go for a nude shade to keep it simple.
Clothing-wise, choose styles that fit not only your body type but your personality as well. This can be a reflection on what subjects you teach or the age of the students you deal with. If you work with young children, you’ll want to stay away from delicate fabrics that can be hard to remove stains off of. Comfy jeans and a nice blouse with shoes with a little heel can do the trick. For teachers at the middle school to high school level, you can opt for a trendier look but remember to be age appropriate. Stylish dress pants or slacks with a mini blazer or ribbed sweater can give you the youthful, yet sophisticated appearance. Are you a college professor? Then your options for clothing are pretty much unlimited. You can don a power suit or dress down in a pair of jeans or shorts with a turtleneck or V-neck blouse.
No matter what grade you teach or your personal taste, you don’t have to hide behind frumpy sweaters or stuffy, plaid suits. Showcasing your own fun, personal style will not only allow you to feel confident about your look, it’ll also allow your students to see you in a different light. Who wants to fall under the category of old school teachers anyway?
