Budgeting for Bills and Beauty

Budgeting for Bills and BeautyWith the latest economic woes, many people are concerned with keeping their budgets together while still being able to indulge in products they want. When it comes to beauty, operating under a tight budget can be enough to ruin your day. However, it is possible to balance both your budget with your beauty needs. All it takes is a little discipline and know-how.

It goes without saying that keeping up with the latest beauty products, trends, and treatments can cost a small fortune if you let your spending get out of hand. That being said, the biggest step towards making your budget and your beauty needs work together is to be true to yourself about what you need and what you want. There is a difference. Beauty concerns that most women “need” include daily skincare items such as cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Beauty concerns that usually fall into the “want” category include manicures, pedicures, massages, facials, etc.

Organization is also a key factor. If you haven’t already, you may want to use a dry erase board or create a spreadsheet using your computer to keep track of your monthly expenses to get an idea of how much you’re spending and how much you are contributing to bills. If you spend more than you make, that’s a huge problem to correct. By limiting your spending you’ll be able to save up enough money to cover all your necessary bills, balance your budget and - if done right - have some play money left over to spend on your beauty needs.

Are your beauty needs vast? Then consider putting away a small percentage of what you make from each paycheck you receive and use that money to purchase what you need. Discipline will take you a long way if you know how to control your spending on beauty products and treatments. For example, don’t fall prey to every beauty item that is “on sale.” Ask yourself whether it is something you actually need or if it’s only something you want that can be purchased at another time. Beware of shopping for beauty products online as well. Even though a site may be offering a free gift or free shipping on your order of beauty items, chances are you still have to spend a significant amount in order to qualify to that special. If you’ve got a budget to balance and bills to pay, chances are your “special sale splurge” will only hurt your wallet.

Additionally, you’ll want to learn how to be a savvy shopper. Look for more affordable versions of higher priced beauty products. Also buying in bulk can help you save a few dollars and ensure that your supply of beauty items lasts for a while. If you’re the type of person that can’t live without your beauty treatments at the salon or day spa, take your beauty regimen to the next level by learning how to do your favorite treatments at home. There are plenty of DIY recipes out there that will instruct you on how to do your own manicures, pedicures, facials, and other fun pampering treatments. If you normally make trips to get your eyebrows done, learn how to maintain them at home in between visits in order to save yourself from spending money on multiple appointments.
