How to Be a Super Woman, By: Alicia Keys

How to Be a Super Woman, By: Alicia KeysFunny to think that a personality like Alicia Keys would need to devise a plan in her life to stay on the superwoman track. On stage she exudes confidence and poise. But she openly shares how she gives herself pep talks before going out to face her adoring fans, reminding herself that she’s great; she’s talented and she can do this. In fact, the lyrics to her hit song “Superwoman” were “intended from my own uplifting.” That may be so, but thousands of women feel like the song was meant just for them. So, to all of you, Alicia shares her recipe for superwoman status.

Alicia grew up in Hell’s Kitchen, a desperate part of New York City that is now working to improve and provide a better environment than the one she grew up in. At nine years old Alicia would be loud-mouthed and confrontational to the pimps and drug dealers who would call for her to come for them. “I felt bad coming down to their level… One day I realized I didn’t have to.” Her advice, be better than you ever though you could be in a hard situation. Rise above as often as you possibly can.

And she has. When she was 19 and working on her first album, the label told her they wanted something more commercial. She said no. Alicia was determined to be the only person she knew how to be. It was during the time when she waited for her lawyers to win back the rights to the music she’s already recorded, that she wrote a lot of her songs. Superwoman advice #2: Stick to what your gut tells you. Don’t be afraid to try and fail and keep moving on.

Even a superwoman will burn out if she doesn’t have someone there to help her. Alicia says that a “great friend…looks out for you when you’ve forgotten how to look out for yourself.” She learned that when a friend saw how tired she was and cancelled her appearances so she could go to bed. Real women, strong women can ask for help. It makes us all better than we are to help and be helped.

The final bit of advice from this super star is to take notice of the people who come into your life at just the right time and of those who stay there through it all. When you feel lonely or without roots, look at your “family” and know that there are people who will be there to stand with you. All you have to do is realize who they are and see the message they carry for you just by being your friend and confidant.
