The first thing to make sure you have when being admitted to the hospital is the support of your friends and family. Make sure there is at least one person you know you can call on for anything, day or night. Be sure to have that person’s phone number handy and talk to him/her before you head to the hospital to let them know what you’ll need from them and what they can expect. The person you pick will be your go-to person if you need things retrieved from your home or if you need something from outside the hospital. This person can be your spouse/significant other, best friend, or your child (if he/she is of driving age). Make sure they have the kind of schedule that can accommodate your situation.
Because hospitals can seem cold and lonely, it helps to surround yourself with items that are familiar to you. This can include framed pictures, photo albums, stuffed animals and even flowers to brighten up your room. To help pass the time, have a stack of good books, magazines, notepads (for when you have to write something down), crossword puzzles, and a laptop around to keep up on your emails and to communicate with others during your hospital stay.
Pack your toiletries ahead of time and include all your skincare products, beauty items and shower/bath products - don’t forget hair products! You may not need to put on a full face of makeup or style your hair completely during your hospital stay but that doesn’t mean you can’t still cleanse, tone and moisturize to keep your complexion healthy and glowing. Makeup-wise, pack the essentials that you’ll need for when you want to look your best. Of course keep it simple. Mascara, powder, lipstick and eye shadow should be more than enough.
The best way to beat the dreariness of a hospital stay is to have people around. Being surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones can be enough to lift your spirits and make the time go by faster. When you’re alone do your best to get out and walk around. Don’t feel the need to be cooped up in your room all day and night. If it’s okay with your doctor, take a daily walk around the grounds of the hospital. Spend some time outdoors and enjoy the weather or walk a few rounds in the area where you’re staying.
Having home cooked food can also make your hospital stay more bearable (who actually likes hospital food anyway?). Before accepting outside food, be sure to check with your doctor.
