1. Re-evaluate your list. Did you make your resolutions in the heat of the moment and commit to unrealistic goals? Don’t be afraid to make adjustments. If one hundred reps are just too many, lower it to three. You may even need to take a few items off your list completely. That’s okay too. The whole point of the resolution was to make a better you. If the items you resolved to change or improve are beating you up instead of building you up, make a change and stick to healthier resolutions.
2. Spice ‘em up! If you’re bored silly with the routine you carved out for yourself on January 1, add some zing to keep yourself going. Try rewards. Mark the calendar for a chosen number of consecutive weeks you’ve stuck to your resolution and reward yourself for hitting each of those weeks. Whatever your goal, you can stick to the routine, but change the details. If your resolution was to get healthier, add a new workout DVD to your collection, go to a jazzercise workshop (remember jazzercise?), or shop in the upscale workout gear store for something new.
3. Master your skill. Whatever you resolved to do, there is someone who can teach you how to do it better. Sign up for a class or buy a book that teaches a whole new level of your skill. The more proficient you become, that more likely you are to stick to your resolution (and enjoy it).
4. Have fun with it! Even if your resolution was to quick eating sweets, you can still have a good time pursuing your goal. Invite some friends to find the best recipes for no-sugar treats and make them together. If your resolution was to stop biting your nails, treat yourself and a friend to a manicure. Choose the wildest color they’ve got to show off your success.
5. Share your successes and not-so-greats with someone. Going at it alone is no fun and it’s too easy to convince yourself that one cheat is okay. Confide in a friend and share your resolutions. Make up some outlandish, but realistic, consequences you’ll have to face if you don’t get back on track and stay there. Give your friend permission to ask about you progress and to carry out the consequence. Be sure to choose someone who will be firm, but also offer you grace in those times when you need it to get going again.
