The Bedroom & Bathroom
Your bedding and sheets may be super comfy to snuggle in at night or on a lazy day off but did you know that your bed can also harbor dust mites, dust and other allergens? It’s true. To cut down on these icky allergens and pests, make it a point to wash your sheets and bedding frequently using hot water. To prevent dust mites and dust from settling onto your pillows and bedding, protect everything by using a dust and allergen proof cover. You’ll want to cover your mattress, pillows and box springs. Additionally, stay away from down pillows and comforters, which tend to attract dust mites and allergens. If you plan on redecorating your bedroom and want to paint the walls, opt for paint supplies labeled “low-VOC,” which stands for “low volatile organic compounds.” It’s also important to choose paint supplies that have low to no odor and make sure to air out the room completely.
Even your clothing can give off toxic fumes without knowing it. For those that get their clothes dry-cleaned, be wary of clothing items that come back with a strong chemical odor. Chances are they’ve got some traces of a chemical called “perchloroethylene,” known as “perc” for short. Medical studies show that this chemical causes cancer in animals, although they have yet to prove the same in humans. Play it safe and let your dry-cleaned items air out completely outdoors before bringing them inside your home. To cut back on the presence of perc chemicals choose clothing that is machine washable or hand washable for more delicate fabrics. By washing your own clothing instead of taking it to the dry-cleaner, you can save money and provide a cleaner, safer environment for your home.
Needless to say, the bathroom is a haven for allergens, dust, mold and mildew. Because of that, it is important to think eco-friendly when it comes to the cleaning products you choose. One homemade cleaning product you can use in your bathroom is a mixture of baking soda and regular vinegar. Hydrogen peroxide is another household product that works well as a natural cleaning product. If you have to buy cleaning products from the store, make sure they are labeled “non toxic.” To prevent mildew and mold from gathering too quickly on your walls, ceilings and in the shower, crack your window open while bathing or showering, or make sure of your exhaust fan (found in the ceiling or high up on the bathroom wall).
Need to freshen up the air in your bathroom? Instead of reaching for a traditional air freshener, which can contain chemicals that can cause nausea, headaches or even irritate the lungs, add in a fresh houseplant or homemade potpourri. Having houseplants in any area acts as a natural air purifier as well as absorbs the carbon dioxide.
