Wellness Tips for Recovering from Breast Cancer

Health and Wellness Tips for Recovering from Breast CancerThe very words “breast cancer” strikes fear in the hearts of women everywhere. Once diagnosed, the process of treatment and recovery can be a long and emotional obstacle to overcome. For breast cancer survivors, a positive experience during the recovery phase can help any woman bounce back stronger.

After the treatment and surgery, now comes the last leg of the journey from breast cancer: recovery. This time can be very emotional and physically stressful but there are ways to help the path of recovery become a positive and empowering part of your life as a breast cancer survivor.

From chemotherapy to radiation treatment and mastectomies, the methods for eliminating cancerous cells in the breasts can overwhelm any women and rob her of energy, strength and peace of mind. After all is said and done, your body may not feel like your own and may take weeks to months to fully recover and feel like yourself. The following tips will help you keep a level head while rebuilding your body back to its natural, healthy state.

The number one health and wellness tip for breast cancer survivors is getting plenty of rest. This can be difficult for super moms and other women who are used to always being on the go. However, even the strongest woman can’t come back from a mastectomy or radiation treatment at her best. In order for the body and mind to heal properly, you must be willing to take life at a slower pace and get accustomed to resting for long periods of time as needed. Aside from making it a goal to get a full night’s rest, don’t feel obligated to be up and about during the daytime. Make time for cat naps as needed and if you feel tired, sit down and take a breather. With time your energy will be renewed and your body will be ready to resume its everyday activities…but resting is vital and it isn’t wise to try and speed up the process by getting back into the swing of things before your body is ready.

Another helpful tip for breast cancer survivors during the road to recovery is to let go of your pride. Everyone needs help and after recovering from cancer, survivors will need all the help they can get. This is the time to let yourself be cared for and pampered as needed by friends and family. Asking for help does not make you vulnerable or weak. Allow others to assist you when you need it. During recovery your mind should be at rest, not cluttered with thoughts about what needs to get done and when. If certain things just have to be taken care of, make a list of what needs to be done and choose the right people within your support group to take care of them for you.

Eating right and following doctor’s orders are also essential in making a full recovery. A diet rich in proteins will provide plenty of amino acids, which are needed for the body to repair itself. To avoid the sometimes physical task of preparing a meal, try precooking your meals and freezing them. When you’re feeling hungry, all you’ll need to do is thaw out your food and heat it. This saves you time and energy. Eating a meal with plenty of family and friends around will lift up your spirits and make eating more enjoyable. The healthier your diet, the better your body will be able to repair and defend itself.
