Treating Migraines with Natural Remedies

Treating Migraines with Natural RemediesMigraines wreak havoc on those who suffer from them and anyone who loves a migraine sufferer. They can range from “minor” migraines that make light and sound the enemy to attacks that cause nausea and force you to stay in bed for days. Finding a prescription to fight your migraines may be necessary, but researchers are putting more and more emphasis on natural remedies as a complement to your prescription as well as preventative medicine. The following are reported to be the most effective with the least or no known side effects.

Acupuncture. Several major studies show that acupuncture is an effective migraine fighter with few reported side effects. It has been shown to relieve migraine pain as effectively as the prescription drug Sumatriptan. This is big new for sufferers who constantly fill prescriptions. Acupuncture may offer longer lasting relief and additional health benefits.

Breathing Exercises. Migraine attacks are often triggered by stress. Breathing exercises, such as those taught during yoga instruction, can not only reduce stress during an attack but may combat future migraines. By learning to identify stressors in your life, you can begin breathing techniques before stress levels register in your body. Breathing easy can be beneficial to your overall health and well-being which plays a major role in migraine therapy.

Cognitive Therapy (CT). Those who receive CT report fewer, less severe migraines and some have found that they are able to lower their prescription medication after consistent, successful sessions. CT works by aiding in the identification of migraine triggers. This therapy also teaches patients how to lower stress levels, which can increase the pain. Be sure to find a respected therapist should you choose this option.

Co-Enzyme Q10. This natural antioxidant gets rave reviews from European researchers who tested it against a placebo. Those who took 100 mg of the Q10 three times a day had fewer migraines, fewer days with a headache and fewer bouts of nausea during migraine attacks. If you choose to try Q10, be sure to ask your health care provider or pharmacist for a reputable brand. Not all are created equal.

Butterbur. This herb contains compounds that are believed to stop inflammation of the blood vessels, which may trigger migraines. While butterbur does not help a migraine already in full swing, when taken over time it does help prevent the onset of migraine pain. Be sure to consult your physician for possible side effects and drug interactions when using butterbur.

Alone or combined, these natural remedies may be the answer you’ve been searching for as a migraine sufferer. To help alleviate or prevent future headaches, remember to keep any prescription medications or natural remedies you may require on-hand. Make CT or breathing exercises part of your daily routine so you are quick to call on them when you sense a migraine coming on or find yourself in a trigger situation.
