What Meditation Can Do for You

What Meditation Can Do for YouEveryone manages stress in different ways. Some handle it better than others but even for people who seem to find it hard to maintain peace of mind, meditation can be a great alternative. If you’ve never tried meditation before, there are a number of ways to practice this ancient method of relaxation and spiritual rejuvenation.

The practice of meditation goes back many years and deals heavily with being sound in mind, body, and soul. Meditation is often associated with ancient traditions and religions (think monks in the East), but just about anyone can use meditation in their lives without those factors. The main goal of meditation is bringing undisturbed focus to the mind and calming it from busy thoughts. This is usually easier said than done, but with practice it can be mastered. There are two types of meditation: concentrative and mindfulness. Concentrative meditation is the form that most people picture when they think of meditating: sitting down and focusing on an image, sound, or breathing pattern in order to calm the mind and keep it focused for a period of time. Because this process involves eliminating outside sounds and distractions, there must be a high level of concentration, hence the name. Once you have achieved the right level of concentration, your breathing will slow down and you will feel a sense of tranquility.

Mindfulness meditation is somewhat opposite of concentrated meditation. Instead of focusing on a single factor, the mind hones in on its surroundings and takes in everything without reacting to them. The purpose of this type of meditation is to allow a person to be able to let his/her mind wander aimlessly with getting caught up in reacting to the thoughts or emotions. This results in a calm and serene state of mind.

There are numerous health benefits that can be gained from meditating. Not only can memory and concentration become more enhanced, decrease in muscle tension and high blood pressure, increase in blood flow, reduction of emotional distress, depression and other negative thought patterns, and aiding in conditions such as arthritis and certain allergies are also common positive benefits.

If you’re in an environment where sitting in a peaceful room for a period of time is hard to come by (this is especially true for stay at home mothers and busy working women), there are plenty of options available that not only make meditation more accessible, but fun as well. You don’t have to follow the above methods in order to properly meditate. There are gyms and fitness centers that hold meditation classes, completely equipped with candles, incense, and other factors that create a soothing environment. Other people turn to special forms of exercise that involve the use of meditation. Various types of yoga fall under this category. Search online or go to your local gym to find out what classes may work for you and help you get a better hold on life.
