Pregnancy causes a lot of changes within a woman’s body and the breasts are no exception. Many new mothers will experience their breasts in a new way that can be overwhelming and a little confusing. For many, having to let go of their favorite push-up bras may be quite a change but if you know what to expect you can properly prepare for the change and make sure you are taking good care of your breasts.
While pregnant, your breasts will become fuller and as a result can become more sensitive. While you may have spent a small fortune on the sexiest bras, you’ll have to trade them in for maternity bras. These types of bras are designed specifically to cater to expectant mothers. Unlike the maternity bras of old, the newest models are very stylish and allow you to still feel sexy as your pregnancy progresses. Of course not all maternity bras are a perfect fit so it is important to take your time while shopping for one. Even maternity bras can be uncomfortable if they aren’t right for you so avoid the discomfort and invest in a maternity bra that has all you need.
If you are a fan of underwire bras, the good news is that you don’t have to give them up because of your pregnancy. There are maternity bras that carry the underwire designs for your stylish tastes, however it is recommended that expectant mothers try to avoid wearing underwires if at all possible because of the tendency to restrict the breasts, which can be uncomfortable. Underwire bras are also not recommended for women who are lactating. Sometimes these underwires can snap and break, which can cut off the circulation of the breasts’ fluid nutrients. As a result, pressure can build on the breasts and cause uncomfortable swelling. However, if you just can’t bear to part with an underwire, there are other options. Some maternity bras have a design that are similar to the underwire design but are more appropriate for your breasts. These types of bras come with flexible plastic to provide extra support and do not hinder the growth and development of your breasts.
It is also helpful to buy more than one type of maternity bra to suit your changing body over the months. After delivering and getting ready to breastfeed you’ll also want to buy a nursing bra. Similar in design, many stores sell both maternity and nursing bras as one in the same. It is your choice whether you want to keep the maternity bras you’ve been using during nursing or if you want to buy specific nursing bras. Most nursing bras come with special compartments that hold the nursing pads in place, as well as front clasps for easy removal. Having two to three different types of maternity of nursing bras should be more than enough to suffice. The best way to extend the life of your bras is to hand wash them. This will preserve the shape and condition of the material. Avoid twisting or wringing the bras and hang dry them for best results. Ideally, you’ll want to wear your maternity and/or nursing bras until you are completely done nursing your infant. There is also nothing wrong with going without a bra if that is what you prefer but you may want a nursing bra for those times when you leak breast milk.
