Can Your Perfume Harm Your Baby?

Can Your Perfume Harm Your Baby?Being pregnant is a wonderful time in any woman’s life but this fragile stage of bringing a tiny life into the world also comes with many cautions and risks. Expectant mothers have to be wary of what they eat, their lifestyle, and getting enough exercise. Furthermore, outside factors can also have an impact on the health of the unborn baby. What about the daily things in your life such as beauty products? Is there really a reason to fear wearing perfume or other scented items on your skin during pregnancy?

It goes without saying that certain ingredients and exposure to chemicals can negatively affect the health of an unborn baby but do your favorite perfumes and other fragrance-filled products fall into that category? According to the latest medical studies, the answer is yes but there’s more to the findings. During the first 8-12 weeks of gestation (length of the pregnancy), an unborn baby is extremely vulnerable to outside influences. In this particular case, exposure to chemicals in perfumes and scented beauty products can block the hormones needed to properly develop the reproductive organs. As a result, male babies may experience issues such as a low sperm count and even infertility later on in life.

Because the studies were conducted on rats, medical researchers are quick to say that the findings may not occur 100% of the time and that the results as they relate to humans isn’t conclusive. Some believe that it takes a certain combination of ingredients and chemicals in the perfumes to negatively affect unborn male fetuses. However, due to their findings, they do encourage expectant mothers to either stop using their scented beauty items and perfumes during that 8-12 week time period or at least minimize their use. On the flip side, manufacturers of perfumes and beauty products ensure that their items are properly tested before being sold and have no intention of labeling their products as harmful to pregnant women. Medical researchers also recognized that there may have been other chemicals present during testing that may have contributed to their findings but they are already working hard to develop more tests that will directly relate to humans, which will more than likely take many more years.

So what’s the bottom line? While medical studies have shown a possible threat to male babies when it comes to fragrances and scented beauty products, there is no hard, conclusive evidence to cause pregnant mothers to avoid using such items altogether. It is important to continue to be cautious about what you expose yourself to but if you are in doubt, you can turn to natural beauty items that either carries non-scented items or products that contain natural fragrances that have been tested to be safe for use by pregnant women.
