Often they’re filled with back pain, morning sickness, mood swings, and a need to consume strange combinations of food. Because there is so much to deal with when it comes to being with child, most pregnant mothers search for a way to relax and relieve their ailments. When used correctly and with caution, aromatherapy can provide many of those much-needed benefits.

 

Most pregnant women are not only happy that they’re carrying a baby, they’re often scared. So many things can happen and in such a fragile state, pregnant mothers know they can’t do the same things they used to when they weren’t pregnant. However, many mothers-to-be are now turning to more organic or natural ways to cope with the next nine months. If you need some R&R, you may want to visit your local day spa or beauty salon for a special aromatherapy treatment.

 

In most cases, getting aromatherapy while pregnant is completely safe. However, it should be noted that the use of aromatherapy is not for mothers that are still within the first 12 weeks of their pregnancy. This is a delicate stage for the fetus to develop and may cause the risk of miscarriage. Talk to your doctor and get his/her clearance well after the first 12 weeks to receive aromatherapy. Regardless of what stage you are in your pregnancy, it is always advisable to get permission from your doctor to get aromatherapy done. While it is natural and involves fairly safe ingredients, each woman’s body reacts differently and it helps to tell your doctor which kinds of essential oils you plan on using. Some women may experience negative reactions to the oils used in aromatherapy, not to mention the fact that the oil not only goes on your skin but is also inhaled through your nose as well. This puts your baby in contact with the oils and you want to make sure you know for a fact that your aromatherapy treatment won’t put you or your baby at risk.

 

When getting an aromatherapy massage, you’ll want to make sure to avoid the following types of oils, which have been shown to cause menstruation in women: juniper, thyme, jasmine, marjoram, rose damascena, melissa, rosemary, basil, and clay sage. Instead, opt for these pregnancy-friendly oils: avocado, peach kernel, olive oil, evening primrose, wheatgerm, almond oil, and grapeseed oil. These oils contain vitamins such as A, B, D, and E, moisturizers, and other nutrients that can soothe your skin and your senses. If you have a set of favorite oils, you can have the person doing your aromatherapy blend them for you into a special massage mixture.

 

Unfortunately, for those concerned about stretch marks, no essential oils have been proven to be 100% effective in eliminating these. So do your best to deal with your stretch marks and let your aromatherapy session take those cares away, even if it’s only just for a little while.
