Skin Care For Baby

Skin Care For BabyLots of skin care sites forget about your most sensitive and important member of your family: baby.

This shortage of information contributes to a new parent`s lack of understanding about the special needs and qualities of a newborn`s or toddler`s skin. Many parents, especially new ones, don`t realize that baby`s skin needs and tolerances are much different than those of the adults in the family and that baby`s skin can`t tolerate the same ingredients. That`s why we would like to share with you some great ideas for products you can use that are formulated specially for babies.

A Baby`s Skin

"Smooth as a baby`s bottom" - we`ve all wanted that expression said to us about our own facial skin, and if only it were possible - but it`s not. That`s because a baby`s skin is very different from adult skin. Many parents think that once a baby comes out, it`s a dip in the bathtub with the same shower gel we used that morning, and lotions or creams that we throw on our own skin, and then wonder why baby breaks out in a rash. Baby`s skin isn`t quite as developed as ours and is therefore much less resistant to potentially irritating ingredients. A baby`s skin hasn`t yet developed the amount of sebum or collagen, and is therefore drier and considerably thinner. That also means more is absorbed through the skin, leaving them especially exposed.

The Hidden Irritants

If you`ve done it, don`t worry - lots of new parents have. But now it`s time to get on the right track. The sooner, the better for your baby. Using products this early in life that may cause irritation that can greatly contribute to skin allergies and problems later in life. You`ll want to avoid any product that has perfumes, fragrances, dyes, detergents, and harsh soaps. That means avoiding just about any mainstream adult product.

What To Look For Instead

Look for products that are as close to natural as possible and, even more importantly, as simple as possible - the fewer ingredients, the less chance it has of irritating the baby`s skin. Your easiest bet is to stick to products especially formulated for babies, and the best one`s are those who cater only to babies. In other words, a product line that makes only baby products is usually better than a mainstream adult product line that came out with a baby line later. Some lines we can recommend, however? Aveeno, The Healing Garden, Burt`s Bee`s, and of course, the pro`s at Johnson & Johnson.

Natural Oils

Natural oils are great for baby and you can pick them up at any natural store. Jojoba oil, almond oil, primrose oil, and many more are great for hydrating, soothing irritated skin, treating cradle cap, and giving your baby a soothing massage. These oils are great for the whole family and Mom can even use them for sore, tired feet after talking Dad into a foot massage, and sore nipples from breastfeeding. Also, oils won`t evaporate off of the skin like simple lotions do.
