Tips for Expectant Mothers at the Spa

Tips for Expectant Mothers at the SpaBeing pregnant is a wonderful time in a woman’s life but needless to say this state of being can be pretty tough on the body. From weight gain to sore feet and morning sickness, pregnancy can take a toll on even the toughest gal. One of the most natural solutions would be to head to the local day spa for an afternoon of pampering and self indulgence, right? Unfortunately, finding relief isn’t as easy as it sounds. Expectant mothers have plenty of dos and don’ts to be aware of when it comes to the spa and not only her health but that of her unborn baby as well.

Surprisingly, there are many things in a local day spa that could pose as a hazard to the health of your baby. Pregnancy is a delicate time for a woman and everything must be approached with caution - even something as simple as a spa. However, this does not mean that you should stay away altogether. In order to enjoy your next spa appointment in a way that is completely safe you’ll want to be aware of what activities you can partake in and which ones will have to wait until after you have given birth.

When making an appointment at the day spa it is important to tell the staff right away that you are pregnant. A good day spa will know how to work with and accommodate expectant mothers and recommend the best services that are safe. When you arrive, be sure to tell the esthetician about any symptoms you are currently experiencing, including morning sickness. This information will allow the esthetician to make the necessary changes to your treatment, such as improving the air circulation in the room so that you do not get nauseous and avoiding the use of essential oils, which can be harmful to unborn babies.

Regardless of what trimester you are in, it is best to avoid any day spa treatments that involve extreme heat. This means no saunas, steam rooms, heated body wraps or whirlpools. Instead you’ll want to stick to gentler treatments such as facials, manicures and pedicures. However, you don’t have to keep your stomach out of the equation. For expectant mothers that want to treat their growing bellies to a soothing day of pampering, try a gentle, moisturizing body scrub. Not only will this slough off layers of dead skin cells, which can cut down in the itchiness many pregnant women experience in that area, it also has the ability to add hydration to the skin and can even cut down on the appearance of stretch marks. This is especially ideal when you are in your first trimester. The more you keep your stomach moisturized and hydrated, the less likely you’ll be to develop stretch marks.
