Pamper Yourself

How About A Manicure Or A Pedicure

pamper yourself

Feel the need for some pampering? Great! There’s nothing better to lift your spirits than having a manicure or a pedicure. Not only will you feel refreshed, but your hands and feet will look wonderful. If you don’t already have a regular manicurist, here are some pointers for choosing one:

·    Choose a salon that has a state license and a state inspection certificate. Look for a salon that is clean. If it doesn’t look clean, then leave immediately.

·    Meet the manicurist. Ask some questions about her techniques for manicures or pedicures. Look to see if she is licensed. A nail care technician should have a state license and it should be posted. This is also your opportunity to discuss any problems you might have with your nails.

·    Ask about their techniques for sterilizing the implements. All manicure scissors, metal nail files, etc. must be sterilized to prevent the spread of bacteria which can cause funguses. It is best to have the tools heated for sterilization rather than soaked in an antibacterial solution.

·    Look at the manicurist station. Is the table clean and orderly? Is there a supply of fresh towels? Does she use a fresh bowl of soapy water for each customer? Does she use a new file for each customer?

·    Inquire about how much time is required for a manicure. Make sure that appointments are not scheduled too close together. You are paying for a full service, and you don’t want to be short-changed by having the manicurist rush you in order to get to her next appointment.

·    If you plan on having a pedicure ask about the procedures the salon uses to clean the foot tub.

If this all seems a bit silly and a waste of time, consider what can happen if you aren’t careful. American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, was infected with a nail fungus caused from improperly cleaned and sterilized manicure tools. Not just an unsightly problem, this extremely painful infection caused the celebrity to be hospitalized several times the year following the manicure. The infection was so excruciating that it prompted the star to go before the California Senate and Business Committee urging them to pass stricter legislation for nail salons in the state. While most establishments are extremely careful, some customers bring their own manicure tools to the salon for safety sake.

Don’t let this put you off from going to a salon. Being careful doesn’t take a lot of time. Just ask some pointed questions, really examine the place, and go by your instincts. It’s definitely not hard to tell if a salon is up to your standards. Once you decided where to go, book an appointment at a time where you can really relax. Having your nails done is a sure-fire way to ease any tension.
