Repairing Broken Fingernails

NailsBroken fingernails are every woman’s nemesis. They are unsightly.  The snag every little thing they come into contact with. And they always seem to happen at just the wrong time.

Carry a small emery board in your purse to quickly smooth over the jagged edges of the broken nail. Once you get home, you can take the proper steps to repair your nail. The steps you take to repair your nail differ depending on whether your nails are natural or artificial.

Repairing Natural Nails

If you have natural fingernails, and part of your nails tears off, file your nail to the point of the tear. File the nail down evenly. If the tear occurred on one side of the nail, don’t leave the other its original length.

If the nails tears at the bed, trim your nail so that it extends just beyond the bed. It might be uneven in length. However, as the torn area of the nail grows out, you can file the nail to keep it as even as possible.

If a split occurs without any portion of the nail coming off, you may be able to use nail glue to hold the two parts of the nail together.

Repairing Artificial Nails

If you split an artificial nail, you can remove the nail to repair it. You can also keep the nail on your finger. To repair an artificial nail:

·           Remove fingernail polish from the nail and ensure that it’s clean and dry.

·           Apply nail glue to a toothpick and use the toothpick to apply glue to the cracked area of the nail.

·           Hold for 30 seconds.

·           If you need a patch for the nail, cut a small portion of a tea bag or coffee filter.

·           Apply glue to the patch.

·           With tweezers, apply the patch to the nail.

·           Smooth the patch over the nail and let it dry for one minute.

·           You can then file your nail to smooth it out and reapply nail polish.

Preventing Splits and Cracks

If your nails split or crack often, you may not be caring for them properly. There are many causes of frequent splitting and cracking, such as dry nails, regular exposure to harsh chemicals, and lack of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet.

For the occasional split nail, you can use the easy steps above to repair it. For nails that split regularly, make sure to repair them, but also revisit your daily routines to see what you can do to make your nails stronger.
