So what’s the big deal about brittle nails? For one thing, they can make growing your nails difficult. Because they are brittle the nails tend to split easily, which is not only unsightly but makes doing everyday tasks annoying (snagging on clothing, scratching yourself on accident, etc.). Women in particular have an especially tough time when it comes to nails that are fragile. While there are ways to correct brittle nails, why not save yourself the trouble and take steps to prevent them from becoming brittle in the first place? With the right preventative measures, you’ll never have to deal with the nuisances that dry, splitting nails present.
The first step is to be aware of your fingernails and how you treat them. Proper hydration is key to maintaining healthy, glowing, strong nails. When the nail bed lacks moisture it contributes to brittleness. The solution: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! There are endless products on store shelves that are specially formulated for the hands and nails. Carry a small tube in your purse, car or on your desk at work so that it will be readily available for when your hands and nails get dry.
Avoid harsh chemicals that can strip moisture from the nail bed and cause them to become weak and brittle. The best way to accomplish this is by protecting your hands. Make it a point to wear gloves if you are doing hands-on activities that would expose your fingers to chemicals or cause them to become damaged. For example, wear heavy duty, yet comfortable gloves when gardening outdoors. Even exposing your hands to dish water on a daily basis effectively results in wear and tear on your nails. Switch to using the dishwashing machine or put on some handy rubber gloves. Believe it or not, the nail care products you use can also lead to brittle nails—specifically nail polish. Whether you’re a regular at the nail shop or prefer to do your own manicures at home, don’t make it a habit to douse your nails in nail polish remover frequently. Additionally, use nail care products that promote strong, healthy nails. Look for nail care products that contain nylon fibers and organic ingredients that are all natural.
You can also give your nails a health boost by taking multivitamins or supplements. Make sure you check with your doctor before trying supplements or multivitamins if you have a preexisting health condition.
