Online hackers are good at what they do. With a few clicks of the mouse, they can obtain everything about you, from your home address to your social security number and bank account information. Do not give them that chance! Millions of people shop online everyday for various items but it only takes a few missteps to result in identity theft. Feel free to enjoy buying skincare products from your favorite online retailer but remember to always be safe about it. One wrong turn and your credit history can be ruined.
Whether it’s your first time buying beauty products over the Internet or if you’re an online shopping pro, it never hurts to keep the following tips in mind each time you start to fill your online shopping cart with goodies:
Keep it secure:
Only make purchases through sites that use a secure server. These often require you to punch in a security code found on the back of your credit card, or enter random letters or numbers to ensure you are whom you claim to be. Even though these steps may pose as a nuisance, they are there for a reason and that is to protect your personal information.
Read your emails carefully:
It is common for an online retailer to send you notifications by email with special offers. However, you should never give your credit card information out to anyone who emails you from a skincare company. If the email looks suspicious, it is probably a scam. Skilled scammers and hackers put together fake company emails and pose as the company itself in an attempt to extract personal information, namely credit card numbers. Most online sites provide terms of service information that states they will never ask for your credit card information over the Internet. If you are in doubt about an email you receive, contact your online retailer and forward them the email if necessary.
Don’t always save information:
Even if you buy your skincare products online regularly, resist the temptation to save your credit card and billing information in the browser. This may save you time, but you are also allowing anyone who comes across your information to make a purchase. Whether it is a friend, family member, or a complete stranger that hacks into your computer, you want to protect yourself from those who do not have your best interested at heart.
Run your credit report:
One of the quickest ways to keep yourself safe while online is to keep up with your credit report. Requesting your credit report is typically free of charge. Check your credit report for any suspicious activity, such as a large purchase that wasn’t made by you. Go over all of your transactions and make sure they fit. If something doesn’t look right, be sure to contact your bank, online retailer and/or the credit card company.
