Consider the woman well into her life who insists on wearing clothes clearly meant for the body of a twenty year old. It doesn’t take much to conjure that image – but it sadly takes awhile to get it out of your mind. Even if she is the most intelligent woman on the planet, you’d never get to that because you’d be so distracted by her clothes. You’d never believe her to be an intellect because she chose to wear that outfit.
Worse still if we’re talking about a mature (in years) woman who acts like a ditz. You hope that life has taught everyone a lesson or two about maturity (in mind) and that you present yourself as the best possible version of you. Again, it doesn’t take long to imagine the conversation with the woman who won’t act her age – not a pleasant place to be.
I work with first graders and high school students. It’s amusing to see a six-year-old who wants to be 13 until she becomes a 13 year old who wants to be 21 and begins to make destructive life-choices. These are the extremes, but they are oh so real and we all know these girls. They are talked about, laughed at and avoided. They are not role models or inspirations. They’re names are not remembered but they are hard to forget.
The women who are role models, who we emulate and hope our daughters will too are the women who have learned to embrace who they are at every turn in life and live to the fullest whatever comes their way – including their age. They may not want to give up the super cute miniskirts and tiny bikinis, but they do and they look sexier for it. They may not want to stop dancing on tables (in public) and making a scene, but they do and their wisdom begins to shape young girls and their life-molding choices. The teenager who learns to enjoys being young and underage finds they are better equipped to handle the freedom that comes at 21.
Acting your age, at every age, take courage and that builds confidence – the kind of confidence that is attractive from a mile away. There is a realness, a lasting beauty to the girl and the woman who knows who she is and isn’t exhausting herself trying to be someone or something different.
