The Gothic Look – Clothes

The Gothic Look – ClothesBeing Goth means standing out from the crowd. Just about anyone can spot a member of the gothic subculture by the clothes they wear. You won’t find preppy, trendy threads or cutesy animals on a gothic gal (well, at least not a normal-looking one anyway). Gothic clothing loves to announce itself and leave people wondering.

The first step towards a gothic inspired wardrobe is to include a lot of black but contrary to popular belief, not all Goths wear all black. Gothic girls can also include shades of red, deep colors such as magenta and crimson are popular shades for items of clothing. Other great colors to incorporate are blue, green, purple and even white. Dark, mysterious and edgy are what inspire gothic clothing so the choices vary widely. Bodices and corsets are two wardrobe items that are highly sought after by Goth girls. Long, flowing black dresses, ripped sleeves, patches, stripes, holes, garments adorned with spikes, or studs are typical types of gothic outfits.

When it comes to gothic fashion, there are a number of different themes you can choose from. No gothic fashion is the same as another. When it comes to choosing your own style, decide if you want a more romantic style (lace, dresses, bodices, velvet material) or more punk (leather pants, spiked collars, latex, boots). These are two of the most popular gothic looks, but as you explore gothic fashion, you’ll undoubtedly find more styles.

Many Goths are into making their own clothes and frequent vintage shops and thrift stores in order to create clothing that is unique and affordable. Most Goths tend to shy away from clothing in stores that is too commercialized, even if it is geared towards the gothic subculture. If you’re not too creative, you can keep it simple with a pair of comfortable black pants, boots and a regular t-shirt with the name of your favorite band. For a more feminine look, throw on a leather skirt, fishnet stockings, knee-high boots with a high spike heel and a sexy corset.

When it comes to shoes, you don’t have to think too hard about what type to include in your new gothic wardrobe. There’ll be no dainty open-toed shoes or major name brands for the Goth girl. From sexy knee-high boots to the more manly combat boots, you can dress up or dress down your footwear as you see fit. Many Goths don’t care about keeping their shoes squeaky clean, so if your kicks start to get dingy or even have holes, you’ll be okay. Gothic fashion is all about wearing clothes that you like that aren’t being worn by everyone else. This allows gothic girls to truly express their creativity and take their fashion to the next level. The sky is the limit for expressing yourself through gothic fashion.
