How to Wear White after Summer’s Over

How to Wear White after Summer’s OverIt’s so cliché to say “no white between Labor Day and Easter,” but how do you pull off white in its “off-season” and still look smashing? Begin by remembering what makes white so desirable in the first place – it’s clean, crisp and an open palette for any color. You can make it pop or keep it simple and elegant. White and its many shades always hint at high class and poise. With this as our basis, here are some tips for taking the most signature color of summer and making it fall and winter spectacular.

One of the most important details to remember is fabric. Summer whites are airy and light and often see-through. After summer’s gone, white fabric must be heavier. If you can see through it, choose something else. Some wool pants may be see-through, but even though it’s the fabric of winter doesn’t mean it’s flattering. You also want to stow away the capris and short skirts until next year. Opt instead for pants that are long and tailored and a bit on the loose side.

Pairing white with darker colors is key to wearing it well in its off-season. This year, you’ll be stylish and lovely wearing white with safari shades. Khaki trench coats layered over black print tops look amazing with a pair of heavy white or winter white trousers.

Black and white will never go out of style. Pair white pants with any black top and you can create a look that’s anywhere from rocker to princess. Add oversized black buttons to a white sweater or coat and you’ve got a look that is easily a hot all through the year.

Another way to hold onto all things white is to accessorize with the color. Add a wide white leather belt to a long black top. Put an oversized white silk flower on a dark dress or in your hair. You can also make dark accessories work with white clothes and coats to pull your look together. Top a white pants suit with a black beret and black sunglasses. Choose long black earring and a black pearl bracelet as a compliment to a long white dress.

Finally, make white an integral part of the patterns you wear all throughout the year. White adds a certain confidence to fall and winter patterns, so go ahead and wear it well. Layer it, too. A white tunic under a mustard cropped cardigan or a pink and white gingham cami under and jean jacket are both great fashion statements.

However you choose to wear white, be bold with your choice and don’t be afraid to show off even if you’re competing with a winter wonderland of snow – it is the color of winter, you know.
