Acoustic Wave Therapy

Acoustic Wave TherapyAcoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) is a treatment that was created in the 1990s and used by sports medicine doctors, podiatrists and physical therapists to treat athletes to relax muscles, minimize stiff joints and increase blood flow to these areas. AWT was adopted by European technology and consists of using compressed air onto targeted areas of skin. When medical professionals used AWT to relieve stiff joints and inflammation, they discovered an unexpected side effect of firmer, more taut skin, and the idea of using AWT to treat cellulite was created.

How does AWT treat cellulite? A machine called a D-Actor is used to dispense compressed air onto targeted areas. The D-Actor has a ballistic (ball-shaped) hand piece that generates acoustic waves that go approximately 1-2mm below the skin’s surface. The pressure that is created helps to break the down the connective fibers that form cellulite; once these connective fibers are broken down, new areas of collagen are able to form and, with the help of increased blood circulation the treated areas, the result is smoother, firmer skin.

Ideal candidates for AWT are those who have areas that have not responded to diet, exercise and over-the-counter treatments. Areas that respond to AWT are thighs, buttocks, arms and abdomen. Treatment is done twice a week for a three-week session, and each appointment ranges between 15 to 30 minutes. Results include firmness, tautness, improvement in elasticity and decreased circumference and can last up to one year. Results can be seen after approximately the second or third visit and after the three-week session, some patients may need additional appointments, since results may vary. For maintenance, doctors recommend one session every three months. Side effects may include some redness, but downtime is minimal and patients can return to work the next day. For those who are interested in this treatment, keep in mind that it is still relatively new and procedures will evolve over time as technology and techniques become more advanced.
