The obvious reason we use body lotion in the first place is to moisturize our skin. However, it isn’t just ashy skin that body lotion is good for. In order to maintain healthy, glowing skin, it needs to be properly hydrated on the outside. Well moisturized skin stays soft, smooth, supple and firm. Over time we tend to lose collagen and elastin in the skin, resulting in sagging, slack, and dull skin. With the improvements in body lotions, there are now special formulations that work to do so much more than regular lotions ever could for the health of our skin.
Certain body lotions come with different benefits. Some are ideal for providing long lasting moisturization, which means you don’t have to worry about getting dry, flakey patches of skin shortly after application. Others are specially formulated to tackle super dry skin types. There are also medicated body lotions that help soothe inflamed, upset skin. For those challenged by aging, there are even anti-aging body lotions that contain special ingredients that have the ability to firm the skin while moisturizing.
When it comes to choosing the right body lotion, it helps to know your skin type and how it has reacted to other lotions in the past. Avoid body lotions that feel heavy on your skin or that leave residue. You’ll want a lotion that absorbs easily into the skin and also keeps it feeling soft and smooth as well as moisturized. If you have a particular skin type or suffer from a skin condition, it would be in your best interest to buy a special body lotion made just for your skin’s needs instead of a generic kind of lotion from the store. Sensitive skin should look into body lotions labeled non-comedogenic in order to avoid negative skin reactions.
You may need to switch up your body lotion depending on the change in the weather. Summertime usually calls for lightweight lotions that don’t leave film on your skin, while you may want to upgrade to a heavier body lotion for the winter, when skin tends to be at its driest. Cocoa and shea butter are examples of ideal heavy body lotions that can be used during the fall and winter.
Be sure to read the labels and look for a body lotion that contains natural ingredients that are fortified with moisturizing properties. Examples of popular body lotion ingredients include: jojoba oil, cocoa butter, almond oil, aloe vera, sunflower oil, shea butter, glycerin, and macadamia oil.
